    Notes: Available data for intrinsic viscosity, molecular weight and infinite dilution frictional properties of polymer-solvent systems are used to establish the relation between the radius, rf, of a “frictional” equivalent sphere applicable to sedimentation and diffusion phenomena, and the radius, rη, of the “viscosity” hydrodynamic sphere. It is found that the experimental data agree with a common equivalent hydrodynamic sphere model in which rη = rf.

    Notes: The kinetics of free radical polymerization of n-lauryl methacrylate (dodecyl methacrylate) were studied at 60 and 80°C in bulk and in benzene solution. The analysis of the data showed the kinetic results deviated from classical behaviour and that this deviation could be explained by the chain length dependence of the diffusion controlled termination rate constant, Kt. Primary radical termination is explicitly considered and rejected as being insignificant in this work. Because of its lessened flexibility poly(n-lauryl methacrylate) shows a greater chain length dependence for Kt than does poly(methylmethacrylate).

    Notes: Due to the particular rheological properties of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCP), their application for imaging technology has been investigated. The first class of polymers investigated in this study are the thermotropic liquid crystalline polycarbonates prepared from the solution polycondensation of p,p-dihydroxybiphenyl with bischloroformate as the aliphatic flexible spacer. From the variety of bischloroformates employed, smectic TLCP's were generally obtained with the possible presence of a nematic mesostate. The introduction of comonomers such as substituted hydroquinones or bisphenols were found to lower both the melting transitions and mesophasic range of the TLCP. From rheological characterization, the amount of nonmesogenic moieties present in the copolycarbonates were found to correlate with the increase in the melt viscosity of TLCP.

    Notes: The effect of solvent on the termination rate constant Kt, in the initial stages of free radical polymerizations has been estimated by considering its effect on the viscosity of the medium and on the overall dimensions of the macroradicals. The expression derived predicts that Kt is inversely proportional to the viscosity of the reaction medium, η0, and that Kt, increases as the overall dimensions of the radicals decrease in poorer solvents. The effect of solvent on the η0Kt, product depends on the average size and concentration of polymer in the system. For relatively high concentrations of high-molecular-weight polymers η0Kt can be greater in a better solvent than in a poorer solvent. This trend would be reversed for low concentrations and/or low polymer molecular weights. Good agreement has been found between experimental and estimated values of η0Kt.
