Notes: The gyrokinetic and gyrofluid models show the most promise for large scale simulations of tokamak microturbulence. This paper discusses detailed comparisons of these two complementary approaches. Past comparisons with linear theory have been fairly good, therefore the emphasis here is on nonlinear comparisons. Simulations include simple two-dimensional slab test cases, turbulent three-dimensional slab cases, and toroidal cases, each modeling the nonlinear evolution of the ion temperature gradient instability. There is good agreement in both turbulent and coherent nonlinear slab comparisons in terms of the ion heat flux, both in magnitude and scaling with magnetic shear. However, the nonlinear saturation level for ||Φ|| in the slab comparisons shows differences of approximately 40%. Preliminary toroidal comparisons show agreement within 50%, in terms of ion heat flux and saturation level.

Notes: The Hamiltonian theory for the two-component AKNS hierarchy and Yajima–Oikawa hierarchy is considered from the viewpoint of reduction. We show that the second Hamiltonian structures of the former is a Dirac reduction of the sl(3) current algebra, while the latter is related to the classical W(3)4 algebra. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report results of the TFTR fission detector calibration performed in December 1988. A NBS-traceable, remotely controlled 252Cf neutron source was moved toroidally through the TFTR vacuum vessel. Detection efficiencies for two 235U detectors were measured for 930 locations of the neutron point source in toroidal scans at 16 different major radii and vertical heights. These scans effectively simulated the volume-distributed plasma neutron source and the volume-integrated detection efficiency was found to be insensitive to plasma position. The Campbell mode is useful due to its large overlap with the count rate mode and large dynamic range. The resulting absolute plasma neutron source calibration has an uncertainty of ±13%.

Notes: The adsorption and dissociation of H2S on GaAs(100) has been studied using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and isotope exchange techniques. The dissociative adsorption of H2S at 100 K produces only H–As species with a vibrational frequency of 2072 cm−1. Upon warming to 200 K, the vibration of H–As clearly shifts to 2105 cm−1, corresponding to a free H–As species. In addition, the formation of H–Ga (1887 cm−1) is also observed upon thermal annealing. In coadsorption studies of H2S and D atoms, three main desorption features of H2S were observed at 135, 200, and 375 K, respectively. The peaks at 135 and 375 K can be attributed to the desorption of molecularly adsorbed H2S and the recombinative desorption of adsorbed H and HS, respectively. In addition to the 375 K peak, the desorption feature at 200 K also undergoes isotope exchange between coadsorbed D atoms and H2S. These observations strongly suggest that the dissociative adsorption of H2S on GaAs(100) involves an intermediate of Ga–HS—H–As. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract For any two arbitrary positive integers “n” and “m”, using them th KdV hierarchy and the (n+m)th KdV hierarchy as building blocks, we are able to construct another integrable hierarchy (referred to as the (n, m)th KdV hierarchy). TheW-algebra associated to the second Hamiltonian structure of the (n, m)th KdV hierarchy (calledW(n, m) algebra) is isomorphic via a Miura map to the direct sum of aW m -algebra, aW n+m -algebra and an additionalU(1) current algebra. In turn, from the latter, we can always construct a representation of aW ∞-algebra.

Notes: Abstract We consider the Darboux type transformations for the spectral problems of supersymmetric KdV systems. The supersymmetric analogies of Darboux and Darboux-Levi transformations are established for the spectral problems of Manin-Radul-Mathieu sKdV and Manin-Radul sKdV. Several Bäcklund transformations are derived for the MRM sKdV and MR sKdV systems.

Notes: Summary. We consider the vectorial approach to the binary Darboux transformations for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy in its Zakharov-Shabat formulation. We obtain explicit formulae for the Darboux transformed potentials in terms of Grammian type determinants. We also study the n -th Gel'fand-Dickey hierarchy introducing spectral operators and obtaining similar results. We reduce the above-mentioned results to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili I and II real forms, obtaining corresponding vectorial Darboux transformations. In particular for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili I hierarchy, we get the line soliton, the lump solution, and the Johnson-Thompson lump, and the corresponding determinant formulae for the nonlinear superposition of several of them. For Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II apart from the line solitons, we get singular rational solutions with its singularity set describing the motion of strings in the plane. We also consider the I and II real forms for the Gel'fand-Dickey hierarchies obtaining the vectorial Darboux transformation in both cases.
