Notes: An Er-doped LaP5O14 ferroelastic crystal has been studied by synchrotron radiation white beam x-ray topography. A set of normal ferroelastic domains is revealed in topographs by the intense contrast at the domain walls and the temperature dependence of the wall contrast is shown to be in good agreement with that expected from the structural consideration. In addition to growth bands and growth sector boundaries, a type of abnormal boundary is observed, and the contrast varies with the occurrence of phase transitions. A detailed discussion on experimental results is given in terms of structural and symmetry analyses.

Notes: Ta/Al multilayer films with a modulation wavelength of 7.0 nm were grown using magnetron sputtering. The Bragg θ-2θ scan pattern and the plate film photograph of x-ray diffraction reveal that the sample has Ta(110) and A1(111) axial textures with a mosaic spread of about ±5° and coherency strains. The structure change of the multilayer sample after annealing at 550 °C for 2 h is determined by the plate film photography of x-ray diffraction to study the thermal stability. It is found that after annealing a large amount of Ta and Al atoms at the interfaces are combined into TaAl3 with [(202)+(002)] textures.

Notes: 〈100〉 oriented misfit dislocations in In0.06Ga0.94As/GaAs heterostructures with relatively low misfit f (f=0.0043) have been observed by synchrotron radiation topography. InGaAs samples consist of 2500, 4000, and 6500 A(ring) thick In0.06Ga0.94As layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy at 580 °C. All the topographs were taken by synchrotron radiation double crystal topography. The panchromatic cathodoluminescence complementary technique in the scanning electron microscope was also applied. Misfit dislocations lying along both 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 directions have been observed. The dislocations parallel to 〈100〉 directions have much lower density and extension in length than those aligned along the 〈110〉 directions. The climb mechanism of the generation of dislocations, probably due to the high density of point defects during the high temperature growth, is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Raman scattering studies were performed on ZnSe–ZnS strained-layer superlattices with different strains. In the optical phonon regime, the Raman spectra of the ZnSe–ZnS superlattices with a superlattice axis along [001] show optical phonons confined in the ZnSe well and ZnS barrier layers, and display a two-mode behavior corresponding to ZnSe-like and ZnS-like modes. We report the experimental results, by means of Raman scattering of confined longitudinal optical phonons in ZnSe–ZnS strained-layer superlattices. The Raman frequency shift dependence on the layer thickness, superlattice period, and interface strain is presented and discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Brillouin scattering studies were performed on ZnSe-ZnSe1−xSx strained-layer superlattices with the composition x∼0.2. We have observed scattering from longitudinal guided modes (LGM) whose velocities are determined primarily by the C11 elastic constant. From the measured velocity of the first-order LGM of the quasitransverse acoustic mode and of the quasilongitudinal acoustic mode, the C11 and C44 elastic constants in ZnSe-ZnSe1−xSx superlattice film have been observed. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The in-plane uniaxial anisotropy and perpendicular anisotropy of sputtered Co/Ag(111) multilayers have been investigated by magnetic measurements and the in-plane ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique. The data-fitting analysis for the FMR experimental results about the angular dependence of the resonance field shows that the in-plane anisotropy cannot be fully described by only using the first-order term, and the second-order term must be included. Furthermore, the interface-induced anisotropy has been obtained by FMR. Both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings have been revealed by hysteresis loop measurement. Specifically, a spin-flip phase transition has been observed in the sputtered Co/Ag(111) multilayers, which is attributed to the effects of the AF-coupling and in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Longitudinal acoustic and optical phonon modes of a ZnSe/ZnSxSe1−x (x(approximately-equal-to)0.20) lattice-mismatched superlattice, prepared with atmospheric metal organic chemical vapor deposition method, have been investigated by light scattering measurements. Despite a lattice mismatch as large as 1% between the alternating layers, the measured longitudinal elastic constants are in agreement with the calculated values of an unstrained effective medium model. Furthermore, a correlative study was made by fitting the spectra to a spatial correlation model, which reproduces line shapes of the observed confined longitudinal-optical modes without incorporating the strain effects. The results demonstrate that a combination of Brillouin and Raman spectroscopy provides a good method to determine accurately the elastic constants and strain information of the lattice-mismatched superlattices and heterostructures.

Notes: The Brillouin light-scattering technique has been exploited in order to reveal surface acoustic phonons in both periodic and Fibonacci quasiperiodic Ta/Al superlattices. In periodic specimens, about 0.5 μm thick, it is found that, as the superlattice period is reduced from 10 to 4 nm, the phase velocity of the Rayleigh acoustic mode exhibits an anomalous increase, corresponding to a 20% enhancement of the effective shear elastic constant c44. In 2k-component and 3k-component Fibonacci quasiperiodic superlattices, with total thickness of about 1.5 μm, an enhancement of c44 similar to that of periodic specimens has been evidenced, which is connected to the average density of the interfaces, rather than to the quasiperiodicity. This enhancement can be attributed to the presence of interfaces extended over a number of atomic planes, due to the mutual interdiffusion between Ta and Al, as inferred by x-ray and electron microscopy experiments.

Notes: An investigation of twin structures in NdP5O14 single crystals has been undertaken using white-beam synchrotron x-ray topography. The so-called a-type twins along the a axis are clearly revealed in the topographs. The displacements of the images that arise from the twins are directly measured in different topographs. With the measured values, the monoclinic distortion angle δ(δ=β−90°) is calculated, which is in good agreement with the unit cell parameters. A fine-beam Laue diffraction pattern of the twin has also been taken which is well consistent with its simulation. From these results, the twin structures of NdP5O14 are discussed.

Notes: The position of misfit dislocations with respect to the strained interface in [001] In0.1Ga0.9As/GaAs single heterostructures is studied by transmission electron microscopy. The observation that, for h(approximately-greater-than)hc, some misfit dislocations glide away from the strained interface towards the substrate is explained by an analysis based on the elasticity theory of interacting dislocations.
