Notes: Summary The reaction of thiocarbohydrazides1a and thiocarbazones1b with tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) afforded the thiazol, thiadiazole, thiazine, and thiadiazepine derivatives4–7. 2-Dicyanomethyleneindane-1,3-dione (CNIND) reacted with1a,b to give aminoindenopyrazolopyridazinone (12) and phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetraazacyclopentafluorene (13). The indazole and oxathiadiazole derivatives17 and19 were formed during the reaction of1b with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDO). 6,7-Dichloro-5-phenylpyrazolophthalazinol (21) was obtained from the reaction of1b with 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (CHL-p). The oxidative cyclization of thiodicarbazones2a–d with the above acceptors afforded the thiadiazole and thiadiazine derivatives8 and10.

Notes: Abstract An intraperitoneal repeated dose of dimethoate (O,O-dimethyl S-[N-methylcarbamoyl methyl] phosphorodithioate) was injected to male Wistar rats for 8 successive days. Body weight and liver weight decreased significantly while liver/body weight ratio and mg protein/g liver remained unchanged. Twenty serum amino acids were assayed in blood samples collected from hepatic vein, portal vein, and aorta. Most of the measured amino acids showed a tendency of decrease compared to control. The decrease was significant only for taurine, serine, threonine, methionine, tyrosine, histidine, and arginine but not for the rest of the amino acids measured. Glucose, 3-hydroxybutyrate, urea, ammonia, and lactate were measured in the same serum samples. These serum parameters showed a tendency of decrease (except urea) of them from control but the decrease was not significant.

Notes: Abstract Inoculation of soybeans withBradyrhizobium japonicum and also the time of sowing of soybeans were studied under N-fertilization with urea at 0, 96 and 192 kg N/ha. Intensity of infestation with the spider miteTetranychus cucurbitacearum (Saved) was followed over six weeks. Inoculation greatly enhanced nodule numbers and weight, dry weight and N content of 65-day-old plant, seed yield, seed N content, 100-seed weight and efficiency of use of N from urea. Counts of the spider mite were increased by inoculation and N fertilization but decreased sharply under late plantation. Fertilizer N proportionally decreased nodulation, N2-fixation and productivity of chemical fertilizer. A late sowing date gave the least seed production but the maximum percentage increase in seed yield if inoculated. This indicated a lower efficiency of chemical fertilizer N utilization and the necessity for inoculation.

Notes: Abstract A single compartment model has been constructed for predicting hourly concentrations of pollutant concentrations arising from vehicular emissions within a typical street canyon. The model takes account of traffic densities and composition to estimate pollutant emissions within the model compartment. Meteorological data on wind speed and direction are used to define the exchanges of pollutants between the compartment and the surrounding air. A parameter is also included to describe the exchange in calm conditions. The pollutant concentrations are then estimated from a steady state mass balance equation for the compartment, assuming conservation of pollutants. The model was applied to the prediction of carbon monoxide concentrations in Hope Street, Glasgow. Model parameters were fitted using field measurements, together with concurrent meteorological data and traffic flows estimated from traffic census data for Hope Street. The model accounted well for the observed variations in carbon monoxide. It was found that the model parameters varied seasonally, perhaps due to differences in atmospheric stability which have not so far been included in the model formulation.

Notes: Abstract Multielement neutron activation analysis has been applied to the determination of macro, micro and trace amounts of Al, Br, Ca, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb, Sc and V in molasses of Kom Ombo, Edfu, Armant, Naga Hammady and Abu Korkass cane sugar factories. The threshold element concentrations are acceptable and below the safety. Differences in element concentrations may be related to different botanic textures and structures, different compositions of sugar cane plants, corrosion of containers or changes in soil as a result of geochemical differentiation. The method is sensitive down to 0.038 ppm of V. The relative errors due to counting statistics are in the range of 0.2–11%.

Notes: A hodograph-based method, originally developed by the first author for the design of shock-free aerofoils, has been modified and extended to allow for the design of shock-free compressor blades. In the present procedure, the subsonic and supersonic regions of the flow are decoupled, allowing the solution of either an elliptic or a hyperbolic-type partial differential equation for the stream function. The coupling of both regions of the flow is carried out along the sonic line which adjoins both regions. For the subcritical portion of the flow considered here, the pressure distribution is prescribed in addition to the upstream and downstream flow conditions. For the supercritical portion of the flow, the stream function on the sonic line is given instead of the supercritical pressure distribution which is found as part of the solution. In the special hodograph variables used, the equation for the stream function is solved iteratively using a second-order accurate line relaxation procedure for the subsonic portion of the flow. For the supercritical portion of the flow, a characteristic marching procedure in the hodograph plane is used to solve for the supersonic flow. The results are then mapped back to the physical plane to determine the blade shape and the supercritical pressures. Examples of shock-free compressor blade designs are presented. They show good agreement with the direct computation of the flow past the designed blade.
