    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Ergebnisse genetischer und biochemischer Untersuchungen der Resistenz gegenüber Parathion an Stämmen von Tetranychus urticae Koch werden dargestellt. In die Untersuchung waren sowohl der wohl bekannte Leverkusener R-Stamm als auch zwei resistente Stämme von Neuseeland einbezogen. Im toxikologischen Teil der genetischen Untersuchungen wurde eine topische Applikationstechnik angewendet. Genetisch wie biochemisch scheint die Resistenz der zwei voneinander unabhängigen Neuseeländer Stämme mit der Resistenz des Leverkusener Stammes identisch, d.h. von dem gleichen dominanten Hauptgen verursacht zu sein, welches die Hemmungsrate der Cholinesterase-Enzyme senkt. Bemerkungen über die universelle Bedeutung dieses grundlegenden Resistenzmechanismus werden angefügt.
    Notes: Abstract The results of genetic and biochemical studies of resistance to parathion in strains of Tetranychus urticae are presented. Included in the study is the well-known Leverkusen-R strain, as well as two resistant strains from New Zealand. For the toxicological part of the genetic investigation, a topical application technique is employed. Both genetically and biochemically, the resistances of the two independent New Zealand strains appear identical to the Leverkusen resistance, viz., due to the same major dominant gene which lowers the inhibition rate of the cholinesterase enzyme. Comments are made upon the universal significance of this basic resistance mechanism.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé La recherche d'une gamme de solvants pour les essais d'acaricide sur acariens par application locale a montré que le choix est limité par le pouvoir dissolvant, la viscosité et la toxicité. L'acétophénone et l'anisole se sont révelés des solvants utilisable mais l'acétophénone est apparue avoir un faible pouvoir mouillant qui provoque une variabilité dans les valeurs de la DL50 de l'acaricide par rapport à d'autres solvants dans les essais sur Tetranychus urticae Koch.
    Notes: Abstract Investigation of a range of solvents for topical application acaricide tests on mites indicated that the choice was limited by solvent power, viscosity and toxicity. Acetophenone and anisole proved useful solvents but acetophenone appeared to have poor wetting power which caused variability in acaricide LD50 levels compared with other solvents when tested on Tetranychus urticae.

    Notes: Abstract Using Hα observations made at the Astronomical Observatory of Wroclaw University, and 3.5–5.5 keV X-ray data from the Hard X-ray Imaging Spectrometer on board the Solar Maximum Mission, sites of solar X-ray emission are identified which are associated with active Hα features, such as prominences, sprays and surges. The X-ray emission is found to be highly localized within the active (Hα) structures. For example, in the prominences examined, 3.5–5.5 keV X-rays were found only in compact sites near the feet of the prominences. Models predicting that, during the active phase of these structures, the energy release should be evenly distributed along the structure are clearly brought into question. It is argued that these X-ray sites are indicative of the cause of the expulsion and transport of chromospheric material. Models which satisfy these observations are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents first results of the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) recently launched aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). CDS is a twin spectrometer, operating in the extreme ultraviolet range 151–785 Å. Thus, it can detect emission lines from trace elements in the corona and transition region which will be used to provide diagnostic information on the solar atmosphere. In this paper, we present early spectra and images, to illustrate the performance of the instrument and to pave the way for future studies.

    Notes: Abstract EUV spectra obtained with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) show significant flows of plasma in active region loops, both at coronal and transition region temperatures. Wavelength shifts in the coronal lines Mgix 368 Å and Mgx 624 Å corresponding to upflows in the plasma reaching velocities of 50 km s-1 have been observed in an active region. Smaller velocities are detected in the coronal lines Fexvi 360 Å and Sixii 520 Å. Flows reaching 100 km s-1 are observed in spectral lines formed at transition region temperatures, i.e., Ov 629 Å and Oiii 599 Å, demonstrating that both the transition region and the corona are clearly dynamic in nature. Some high velocity events show even higher velocities with line profiles corresponding to a velocity dispersion of 300–400 km s-1. Even in the quiet Sun there are velocity fluctuations of 20 km s-1 in transition region lines. Velocities of the magnitude presented in this paper have never previously been observed in coronal lines except in explosive events and flares. Thus, the preliminary results from the CDS spectrometer promise to put constraints on existing models of the flows and energy balance in the solar atmosphere. The present results are compared to previous attempts to observe flows in the corona.

    Notes: Abstract We report on initial observations of coronal holestructure and evolution by the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) instrument on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The data show that there is coronal activity on time scales of tens of minutes, manifested as brightenings at chromospheric network cell junctions in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths. There are also significant differences in structure seen in different wavelengths in coronal holes. Finally, we show coronal hole EUV spectra and compare them to quiet-Sun spectra, also taken by CDS.

    Notes: Abstract EUV spectra of coronal loops above an active region show clear evidence of strong dynamical activity. We present an example where the Ov 629 Å line, formed at 240 000 K, is shifted from its reference position corresponding to line-of-sight velocities greater than 50 km s-1 with the shift extending over a large fraction of a loop. The observations were made with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), and are from active region NOAA 7981 on the east solar limb on 27 July 1996. An animation has been prepared showing the variation of the shift or flow velocity along the loop. This animation is to be found on the enclosed CD-ROM and gives a clear impression of the dynamical condition present in the loop. The appearance of the loop system in different lines formed over a range in temperature as well as the observed dynamics indicates that loops at different temperatures are not closely co-located. Finally, the results are discussed and related to mechanisms that may cause line shifts.

    Notes: Abstract EUV spectra of a medium-size sunspot and its surroundings, NOAA 7981, were obtained on 2 August 1996 with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The spectral lines formed in the transition region and corona show considerable structure and large deviations from a uniform spatial distribution over the active region. Enhanced EUV emissions in transition region lines are concentrated in small regions outside the umbra of the sunspot throughout most of the observing sequence. Only during a short, active period do we find an enhanced line emission that reaches into the umbra. Preliminary values for the umbral intensity are given. Marked changes are detected between the spatial distribution of line emission in the transition region and the low corona. The difference is not limited to cool and hot non-flaring loops not being cospatial, but includes differences both regarding the time variability and the orientation and size of the emission features. Whereas both rapid (≈ 4 and 2 min) and slow (≈ 10 and 12 h) temporal variations are found in the chromosphere (Hei 584 Ú) and transition region (Ov 629 Ú), the response in the low corona (Mgix 368 Ú) is slow (≈ 5 h). Furthermore, marked differences between the spatial distributions in the Mgviii 315 Ú, Mgix 368 Ú lines formed in the low corona and the coronal Fexiv 334 Ú, Fexvi 360 Ú lines are detected.
