    Description: Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food production sector globally, with production projected to double within the next 15–20 years. Future growth of aquaculture is essential to providing sustainable supplies of fish in national, regional and global fish food systems; creating jobs; and maintaining fish at affordable levels for resource-poor consumers. To ensure that the anticipated growth of aquaculture remains both economically and ecologically sustainable, we need to better understand the likely patterns of growth, as well as the opportunities and challenges, that these trends present. This knowledge will enable us to better prioritize investments that will help ensure the sustainable development of the sector. In Indonesia, WorldFish and partners have applied a unique methodology to evaluate growth trajectories for aquaculture under various scenarios, as well as the opportunities and challenges these represent. Indonesia is currently the fourth largest aquaculture producer globally, and the sector needs to grow to meet future fish demand. The study overlapped economic and environmental models with quantitative and participatory approaches to understand the future of aquaculture in Indonesia. Such analyses, while not definitive, have provided new understanding of the future supply and demand for seafood in Indonesia stretching to 2030. The learning from this research provides a foundation for future interventions in Indonesian fish food systems, as well as a suite of methodologies that can be applied more widely for insightful analyses of aquaculture growth trajectories in other countries or regions.

    Description: Ocean Decade Challenge 8 of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 (the ‘Ocean Decade’) seeks to create an adaptive and dynamic digital representation of the ocean to make the ocean accessible to a broader community, to enhance decision-making and to support sustainable ocean management. While creating a comprehensive digital representation of the Ocean is the ultimate objective of Decade Challenge 8, the focus in this White Paper is on delivering concrete outcomes and the transformational change needed to create the enabling environment and initial digital content, by 2030, that will allow us to fully deliver on the ambitions of Challenge 8 on the longer term. An Implementation Plan (IP) for the Ocean Decade’s Data and Information Strategy is currently under development by the Data Strategy Implementation Group (DSIG). This IP will outline how data systems participating in the Ocean Decade can co-create a distributed, robust, and collaborative ‘digital ecosystem’ that leverages open, scalable, easily implementable, and responsive technologies and management solutions. An interoperable, distributed data and information sharing system must be both deployed and maintained to allow the realization of Challenge 8, addressing specific challenges such as data interoperability, accessibility, and inclusivity. Additionally, potential issues related to data privacy, cybersecurity, and equitable access to technological infrastructure should be addressed to ensure the comprehensive development of the strategic ambition. In developing the Strategic Ambition for Challenge 8, we consider the data and information needs and priorities identified by the other Decade Challenges and their working groups, as our primary users (and contributors), representing as they do the key sustainability challenges for the Decade, and encompassing all relevant stakeholders. Guided by the Decade’s ambition to ‘leave no one behind’ we recognize that this challenge must deliver outputs that are relevant and useful for the global ocean science community, and in fact by extension the widest possible range of users and stakeholders, including the eight billion people on this planet, who should be able to access and use what is delivered by the Decade in ways adapted to their needs and capacities, if so desired. By 2030, the Strategic Ambition for Ocean Decade Challenge 8 is to have in place the enabling environment for the creation of and access to an increasing number of digital representations and twin applications of the Ocean as well as the underpinning data and information needed to develop them, delivering at minimum 10 societally relevant 0global base-layers accessible via a global online Digital Atlas, complemented by a minimum of 10 local use cases (prioritizing SIDS and LDCs) to address challenges in using and contributing to the Decade’s distributed digital ecosystem and to demonstrate and stress test its relevance, effectiveness and inclusiveness.

    Notes: In this article we report the results of time integrated and time resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and photoluminescence time decay measurements as a function of excitation density at 6 K on high quality self-organized InAs/GaAs quantum dots. To understand the form of the experimentally observed photoluminescence transients a Monte Carlo model has been developed that allows for the effects of random capture of photo-excited carriers. By comparison with the results of our model we are able to ascribe the excitation density dependence of the overall form of the decay of the emission from the quantum dot ground states and the biexponential nature of the decay of the first excited state emission as being due to the combined effects of radiative recombination, density dependent carrier scattering, and the restriction of carrier scattering due to state blocking caused by the effects of Pauli exclusion. To successfully model the form of the biexponential decay of the highest energy excited states we have to invoke the nonsequential scattering of carriers between the quantum dot states. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the development of a caesium ion sputter source for the production of small mass-selected atomic clusters. It has been designed to be compact and portable, enabling it to be attached to ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) systems for use in deposition experiments. The sputter source, developed from a high energy (∼20 keV) atomic ion beam source, has been modified by introducing a beam extraction section, resulting in a cluster beam energy of 1.5 kV. This allows mass selection to be performed with a compact Wien velocity filter, greatly reducing the dimensions of the source. The source produces sufficient intensities of small clusters (1 – 15 atoms/cluster) for UHV deposition experiments, for example, a deposition rate of 0.002 monolayers/min for Al7− focused onto a 1 cm2 area has been obtained. It is possible to produce beams of many materials, especially the noble metals and carbon. We show mass spectra for Agn −, Aln− , and Cn− clusters. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The material properties of low-temperature plasma-grown oxide on gas-source molecular beam epitaxial Si0.84Ge0.16 have been investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectra studies show that plasma anodization leads to no segregation of Ge species during thin oxide growth with the onset of partial segregation occurring for thicker oxides. Depth profiling shows that the plasma oxide is stoichiometric in form with the exception of a small percentage of Ge atoms left in their unoxidized state. The density of these Ge atoms agrees with that measured in previous electron trapping studies. In addition, oxide growth rate enhancement of SiGe is observed. These phenomena are explained using a qualitative model for the mechanism of oxide growth of SiGe which is consistent with published results for SiGe: oxides grown with other systems. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
