Notes: Abstract Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) has been used to modify ordinary pyrolytic graphite (OPG) electrodes with adsorbed cobalt tetra-sulphonated phthalocyanine (CoTsPc) in acid solutions. These modified electrodes were prepared in different manners and characterized by cyclic voltammetry. Their electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction and stability in 0.05M H2SO4 solutions was examined at room temperature. The OPG/CoTsPc/PVP modified electrodes were found to be more active for oxygen reduction in 0.05M H2SO4 solutions as compared to the electrode with adsorbed CoTsPc on OPG without PVP. The increase in activity is due to the formation of an adduct between PVP and CoTsPc. U.v.-visible and FTIR studies provide evidence for such adduct formation. Over a 10 h period the activity of the OPG/CoTsPc/PVP system was essentially constant while that of OPG/CoTsPc without polymer decreased by a substantial amount (about 37%). The PVP layer inhibits the diffusion of the CoTsPc and/or Co out of the complex into the solution phase. The stability of the OPG/CoTsPc/PVP system may also be due to low solubility of the adduct between PVP and CoTsPc in a 0.05M H2SO4 solution. Thicker films of PVP decreased the diffusion limiting oxygen reduction current. The effect of pH of the electrolyte solution on the activity of such PVP-modified electrodes for oxygen reduction has also been investigated.

Notes: Summary This work relates to the tensametric studies of various aliphatic alcohols with a view to see if this technique can be used to assess the structural influence on surface activity. From the study of the homologous series of aliphatic alcohols, it is seen that the surface activity increases with increase in chain length of the alcohols. With lower members of the series the desorption peak is not sharp. There is no regular shift of peak potential from methanol to amylalcohol. For the same alcohol the surface activity increases if the carbon atoms are in a straight chain but decreases if they are branched. Primary alcohols are more surface active than secondary and secondary are more surface active than tertiary alcohols. The peak potential is more negative for normal alcohol than that of tertiary alcohol. Saturated alcohols are more surface active than unsaturated ones having the same number of carbon atoms. The peak potential is also more negative with saturated than with unsaturated. Monohydric alcohols are more surface active than dihydric and dihydric is more surface active than trihydric alcohol having the same number of carbon atoms as in monohydric and dihydric alcohols and in this case the peak potential is more negative with trihydric than with monohydric alcohol.

Notes: Abstract The half-lives of the 86.6 keV level in233Pa and the 59.6 keV level in237Np have been measured. A silicon surface barrier alpha detector and a NaI(Tl) gammadetector were used. The decay time spectrum of alpha-gamma coincidences obtained from a start-stop type of time-to-pulse height converter was recorded on a 2048-channel analyser. Analysis of the data gave the following half-life values: $$\begin{gathered} T_{\frac{1}{2}} :^{233} Pa (86.6 keV level) = (37.4 \pm 0.4) ns \hfill \\ T_{\frac{1}{2}} :^{237} Np (59.6 keV level) = (66.7 \pm 0.7) ns \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ . Using the experimental levelT 1/2's, partial gamma-ray half-lives have been calculated for the 86.6- and the 29.6-keV transitions (from the 86.6 keV level) in233Pa and the 59.6- and the 26.36-keV transitions (from the 59.6 keV level) in237Np. The results are compared with the single particle and the Nilsson estimates.

Notes: Abstract The half-lives of the 1291.6 keV level in59Co, 145.43 keV level in141Pr and 27.35 keV level in227Ac have been measured using leading edge and zero-crossover timing techniques. The decay curves analysed by moments, Laplace transform and slope methods gave the following half-life values: $$\begin{gathered} T_{\tfrac{1}{2}} (1291.6 keV level in {}^{59}Co) = (0.538 \pm 0.004) ns \hfill \\ T_{\tfrac{1}{2}} (145.43 keV level in {}^{141}\Pr ) = (1.82 \pm 0.04) ns \hfill \\ T_{\tfrac{1}{2}} (27.35 keV level in {}^{227}Ac) = (41.0 \pm 1.1) ns. \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ From the measured half-lives, the reduced transition probabilitiesB(M1)↓,B(E2)↓ for gamma transitions de-exciting the above mentioned levels in59Co and141Pr are determined and compared with single particle, intermediate coupling and Sorensen estimates. In227Ac, absolute transition probability for the 27.35 keV transition is determined and compared with single particle and Nilsson estimates.

Notes: Abstract The internal conversion coefficients have been measured using a high resolution low energy Ge(Li) detector for the followingM4 transitions:125Te: 109.27keV transitionα T =357±11; RG method,127Te: 88.26 keV transitionα T =484±23; XPG method,129Te: 105.50keV transitionα T =213±10; XPG method. It is observed that these values are lower by 2.5–3.6% as compared with Hager and Seltzer's calculations. A comparison between experimental and theoreticalα T andα T values for elevenM4 transitions shows that the experimental values are systematically lower.

Notes: Abstract The intensities, placements andE2/M1 mixing ratios of transitions in the decay of154Eu have been carefully studied to provide accurate data for microscopic calculations. Coincidence relationships in the decay of154Eu have been studied extensively with a multiparameterγ-γ coincidence system with two large volume Ge(Li) detectors. Spectra in coincidence with twenty energy gates were analyzed. Twenty-nine new coincidence relationships were established and confirmed most, but not all, of several levels previously assigned by energy fits only. From an analysis of coincidence spectra and singles spectra with a 18% efficiency Ge(Li) detector new information on the gamma-ray intensities were obtained. Precise values of theE2/M1 mixing ratios of transitions from the gamma- and beta-vibrational bands to the g.s. band have been determined fromγ-γ directional correlation measurements with a NaI(Tl)-Ge(Li) detector coincidence system. Mixing ratios were obtained for a number of other transitions including those fromK π =0− and 2+ bands from direct and skipped cascade correlations.
