Notes: Restricted Hartree–Fock calculations at the double-zeta level are performed for the closed-shell isoelectronic molecules B12H−212, CB11H−12 , and 1,12-C2 B10 H12 . The geometries are optimized and the vibrational spectra are obtained. The behavior of the molecular orbitals upon carbon substitution is analyzed. The results are compared with the available experimental and theoretical results from the literature. The main features of the electronic structure are correctly described at this level of approximation. The new results can aid in the interpretation of photoemission, infrared absorption, and Raman scattering experiments on these molecules.

Notes: Particle beams have been developed at the Culham Laboratory for many years, mainly for application to the production of high-temperature plasmas. These developments included demonstration of fundamental plasma physics such as particle trapping, heating, and current drive coupled to continuous advances in the physics and technology of ion beam production and transport. This work reached its zenith in production of multimegawatt high-proton fraction sources for the neutral beam injectors for JET. A new initiative is now coming for the development of negative ion based injectors. This wide ranging base of physics and technology provided a springboard for exploitation of beams in areas other than fusion. The last few years have seen increasing R and D at Culham in areas such as space, defense, surface treatment, and implantation. The applications have ranged from beams of H+ or H− to Xe+, from currents of less than 1 mA to currents of amperes and from energies of 50 eV to energies of hundreds of kilovolts. This paper describes some examples of these activities and relates them to the physics and technology base. Future areas of interest are also discussed.

Notes: A detailed high-pressure experimental study of two mafic xenoliths, in which coexisting garnet and clinopyroxene (± plagioclase, spinel and olivine) were crystallized over a P–T range of 10–30 kbar and 950–1200°C, has revealed significant differences in temperatures from those estimated for coexisting garnets and clinopyroxenes using the Ellis & Green Fe–Mg exchange thermometer. The results show perfect matching at 30 kbar, 1150–1200°C, but increasing deviation at lower pressure and lower temperature, with the Ellis & Green calibration reaching a ΔT (overestimate) of c. 145°C at 10–12 kbar and 950°C. The grossular content of the garnet increases from c. 21 mol.% at 10 kbar to 26–31 mol.% at 30 kbar. These results confirm other recent experimental studies that show that the pressure correction, and possibly to a lesser extent the correction for grossular content, applied by Ellis & Green, are not appropriate for lower pressure conditions, and give estimated temperatures that are significantly high when applied to granulitic terranes formed at c. 10 kbar. The new reconnaissance results allow a graphical interpolation of a garnet–clinopyroxene geothermometer based on the Fe–Mg exchange reaction which should be applicable to assemblages formed under lower crustal conditions.

Notes: An optically pumped intersubband laser generator is proposed in which the continuum states above an Al0.2Ga0.8As–GaAs–Al0.2Ga0.8As single quantum well with a width of L=17 nm serve as the highest level in a four-level laser system. The design allows much greater flexibility in the choice of pumping source and simplifies considerably the device fabrication. We have obtained the electronic subband structure of the proposed device and utilized a simple rate equation approach to examine the electron density in different states under optical pumping. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Proton yields in magnetic multipole sources can be increased by the creation of a magnetic "filter'' within the discharge volume, although this may introduce nonuniformity in the plasma. We have investigated the properties of a filter which can satisfy the requirements of plasma uniformity and discharge electrical efficiency and creates a proton yield of 87% when a 60-A beam is extracted at 80 keV. A model describing the behavior of the filter is also described.

Notes: An investigation has been made of the yield of H− ions and electrons extracted from a magnetic multipole, or bucket, ion source as a function of the parameters of the source. Under optimum conditions the H− current density attains a value equal to half of the positive ion current density (H+3) measured at the extraction plane. The experimental results indicate that, while the H− current rises linearly with arc current, the extracted electron current shows a quadratic dependence. There is also a strong dependence of the electron current on the magnetic field applied across the extraction aperture, and source filling pressure. Probe measurements within the plasma volume show considerable axial variation of the fluxes of electrons, H− ions and H+3 ions.
