    Notes: The crystal structure of Rb_2CoBr_4 at 295 and 200 K has been determined. At these temperatures Rb_2CoBr_4 exhibits an incommensurately modulated structure with wavevector {\bf q} = (1/3+\delta){\bf a}^*. At room temperature only the average structure was refined. Lattice parameters are a = 9.732 (3), b = 13.328 (4), c = 7.654 (3) Å, space group Pnam. The R(F) value was 0.0414 for 286 observed reflections (0.0778 for all 477 reflections). At 200 K the lattice parameters are a = 9.691 (4), b = 13.278 (5), c = 7.630 (6) Å, superspace group P:Pnam:\overline{1}ss. Main reflections and satellite reflections of first order were measured. The refinement converged at R(F) = 0.052 for 309 observed reflections (255 main reflections and 54 satellites) and 0.2971 for all reflections (1849; 695 main reflections and 1154 satellites). Amplitudes and phases of the modulation function as well as bond distances show close relationships to those observed in the incommensurately modulated phase of Rb_2ZnBr_4.

    Notes: Abstract A direct inductively coupled plasma atomic emission method for the determination of Ag, Al, As, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Mg, Na and Pb in high-purity tantalum powders has been developed. The electrothermal vaporization technique using a modified longitudinally-heated Grün-ETAAS furnace with sample introduction on a platform and an automated sampling workstation provided the possibility of in situ analyte-matrix separation, freedom of blank, and applicability to routine analysis. Hard- and software were modified to allow signal recording and data processing independent of the spectrometer software. The extent of spectral interferences by Ta-emission at the analyte wavelengths used was determined and the analyte signals of each sample run were automatically corrected. Limits of detection ranging from 5 ng/g (Ag, Cu) to 250 ng/g (K, Pb) were obtained using optimized furnace and spectrometer conditions. The method was applied to the analysis of two tantalum samples and the results for Cu, Fe, K, Mg and Na were compared with those obtained by liquid and solid-samping ETAAS, showing satisfactory agreement.

    Notes: Abstract  Apoptosis-inducing ligands such as Fas ligand (FasL) and tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) have been found to play an important role in cell regulation. Different malignant tumors show an altered expression of these ligands and their respective receptors compared to normal tissues. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate expression of TRAIL, FasL, and its receptor Fas on protein and mRNA levels in breast carcinomas (n=40), fibroadenomas (n=7), and normal breast tissues (n=5). Immunohistochemical reaction demonstrated that FasL was strongly expressed in breast cancer tissues (34/40) while only one fibroadenoma and one normal breast tissue reacted weakly positive for FasL. All fibroadenomas and normal breast tissues as well as the majority of breast cancer tissues expressed Fas on protein level. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis detected high expression of FasL mRNA in breast cancer tissues and fibroadenomas, whereas fibroadenomas showed the highest Fas mRNA copy numbers, followed by breast cancer tissues and normal breast tissues (P〈0.05). Compared to FasL expression, TRAIL could be detected in less breast cancer tissues on protein level (21/40) and was found in only one fibroadenoma and none of the normal breast tissues. Thus, it can be concluded that malignant breast tumors show an altered expression of the two apoptosis-inducing ligands FasL and TRAIL.

    Notes: Abstract Thermo-oxidative and thermo-mechanical stabilities of radiation-cured acrylates and epoxides were examined by TG, DMA and DSC. The polymeric trifunctional acrylates PETIA, TMPTA and THEIC displayed the highest temperatures of onset of degradation. The high crosslinking density of the films resulted in an almost temperature-independent complex E-modulus, as measured by DMA. With increasing degree of ethoxylation or propoxylation of the monomers, decreases in thermal stability and strength were found. For difunctional polymeric acrylates and epoxides, the glass transition temperature was measured. The average degree of curing of UV-cured epoxy films can be determined from the temperature of the maximum in the loss modulus (E″max.

    Notes: Summary A new calibration method for the determination of mercury by CVAAS using collector preconcentration is described. The main piece of a developed calibration device is a special valve which links a closed Hg — saturated gas flow with an open flow of the carrier gas to the AA — spectrometer. This principle allows the direct injection of defined Hg-saturated gas volumes into the sample gas-flow. In this way the known systematic errors of traditional methods by contamination and loss, caused above all by the manual handling of mercury vapor or solution, are avoided. Instrumental and procedural aspects of the application are discussed and the reliability relating to the mercury determination in air and biological materials is evaluated. The new method is superior to the other calibration methods in every way. In the 1 ng Hg range the within-run precision is better than 1%, and the day-to-day precision better than 2%. The accuracy was validated by determining various biological SRMs. All the results in the μg/g and ng/g level corresponded well to certified values. The new method is also a simple and reliable way of carrying out the necessary internal quality control.

    Description / Table of Contents: Es wird ein neuer und einheitlicher Prozeß für die Lösungschlorierung von PVC, PE und Naturkautschuk mit Initiierung durch γ-Strahlung oder radikalische Initiatoren (Azo-Verbindungen) beschrieben. Dichlormethan wird an Stelle der industriellen Lösungsmittel Tetrachlormethan oder -ethan verwendet. Die Reaktion wird in einem Rührautoklaven bei 70-100°C und 4-7 bar durchgeführt. Bei der gleichzeitig stattfindenden Chlorierung des Lösungsmittels entsteht als Hauptprodukt Trichlormethan und weniger als 1 Gew.-% Tetrachlormethan. Die Charakterisierung der chlorierten Polymeren durch DSC- und NMR-Messungen ergab keine Unterschiede zu konventiell hergestellten Proben.
    Notes: A new uniform process for the solution chlorination of PVC, PE, and natural rubber has been developed with initiation by γ-irradiation or radical initiators (azocompounds). The solvent used is dichloromethane instead of the industrially used tetrachloroethane or tetrachloromethane. The reaction is carried out in an autoclave with stirrer at temperatures between 70 and 100°C and pressures from 4 to 7 bar. As a result of the simultaneous chlorination of the solvent, trichloromethane is formed and only less than 1 wt.-% tetrachloromethane. Characterization of the chlorinated polymers by DSC and NMR measurements showed no differences to conventionally chlorinated products.
