Description: Specifications for the COSPAS/SARSAT beacons are presented and related design considerations are discussed. Critical design aspects having significant impact on cost and performance are highlighted. Among these is the oscillator, whose frequency drift specifications require stabilization by ovens or digital control. Design options are presented and their impact on cost and performance assessed. Beacon designs developed to meet COSPAS/SARSAT specifications are shown.

Description: Preliminary results of a past LANDSAT D advanced concept evaluation study to forecast and identify key technologies required for earth resources satellite systems in the 1985 to 2000 time period are presented. Mission categories discussed include agriculture, range management, forestry, geological resources, land use, water resources, environmental quality, and disaster assessment. Sensor and system concepts are described for a passive L-band radiometer (microsat), a texturometer to measure ground surface texture, and a ferris wheel radar configuration that relies on cable tension for support.

Description: Results of a preliminary conceptual design study are presented for a laser altimeter that is capable of high-resolution mapping of the polar ice sheets and is proposed for inclusion in the National Oceanic Satellite System spacecraft or other polar-orbiting satellites. The instrument consists of a pulsed-laser transmitter operating at a wavelength of 532 nm and a duration of 5 nsec, a receiver telescope, a photomultiplier-tube detector, data processing and control electronics, and an attitude sensing and measurement system; a laser footprint diameter of 70 m is planned. The altimeter components are described, and the accuracy of both the altimetry measurement and the attitude measurement is evaluated. A range precision of about 10 cm is estimated, along with an attitude measurement accuracy of approximately 10 arcsec.

Description: The objective of the Severe Storms Observation Satellite (SSOS) is to continuously observe meteorological phenomena from geosynchronous altitude and to acquire data whose analysis will lead to a better understanding, early detection, and prediction of severe storms and other significant mesoscale events such as dust storms. Details are discussed as to the Advanced Atmospheric Sounding and Imaging Radiometer designed for SSOS, the use of a special spacecraft for an R&D mission, data acquisition, and data processing and analysis. The required accurate vertical temperature and moisture profiles as well as high temporal and spatial resolution images can best be obtained by a three-axis stabilized system, which offers approximately an order of magnitude sensing improvement over a comparable spinning system due to its capability to continuously view the earth. A block diagram of the severe storm analysis system is included.

Description: The aim of the Post Landsat-D Advanced Concept Evaluation (PLACE) program was to identify the key technology requirements of earth resources satellite systems for the 1985-2000 period. The program involved four efforts: (1) examination of future needs in the earth resources area, (2) creation of a space systems technology model capable of satisfying these needs, (3) identification of key technology requirements posed by this model, and (4) development of a methodology (PRISM) to assist in the priority structuring of the resulting technologies.
