Notes: This study reports on the director-field configurations of a closed-cylinder nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy in an external electric field. Raising the applied voltage causes the director orientation with a volume point defect to be transformed from a normal to a twisted configuration. The voltage at which the configuration is transformed depends on the aspect ratio of the cylinder.

Notes: A microflow apparatus has been built with a time resolution of 1 ms for mixing volumes of at least 80 μl per syringe. A time resolution of 3 ms is attained for mixing volumes of 10 μl per syringe. Equal volumes are mixed and concentration changes are observed photometrically using fiber optics for coupling light into and out of the observation tube having 1 mm diameter and 10 mm light path length. The reaction of ferrocytochrome c with ferrihexacyanide was used to calibrate the apparatus at 550 nm (10 nm half-width). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A modified Michelson interferometer was used to probe the electron density in plasma plumes produced by pulsed XeCl laser ablation of Al2O3. With one of the mirrors of the interferometer translating steadily, the phase angle of the sinusoidal interference signal was tracked and the XeCl laser was fired whenever the detected phase angle matched a predefined value. The transient interference waveform produced by the plasma plume was then synchronously captured. This moving-mirror interferometer features minimal vibration isolation, fast response time (∼10 ns), powerful noise rejection, and a detection limit of a thousandth of a fringe shift, or ∼1015 electrons per cm3 for mm size plumes.

Notes: The properties of intrinsic optical bistability in nematic liquid crystals were studied. This kind of optical bistability is without resonant optical cavity and electric feedback. We find that the nematic ROTN-200 film can exhibit bistability when applying a constant ac electric field (≈560 kHz) that is greater than a tricritical voltage VTc=2.614 V. The bistable interval is measured and the hysteresis loop is characterized at each different voltage. The splay and bent elastic constants k11 and k33 are obtained to calculate the numerical result. It is found that the experimental results are in good agreement with theory. The experimental setup with which we can easily observe the bistable phenomena is illustrated. Under the consideration of the finite size of the laser beam, the thermal effect and finite beam size effect are discussed. In addition, some new interesting phenomena about the diffraction ring structure of nematic liquid crystal are reported.

Notes: The optimal quasi-static-electric bias for the diffraction efficiency of degenerate four-wave mixing process in a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid-crystal film is studied. The nonlinearity of this process is characterized by the behavior of field-induced molecular reorientation. In our theoretical calculation, it is pointed out that the determination of optimal field is crucially influenced by the twist deformation in the reorientational grating and is also subjected to the competing influences of splay and of bend elastic torques on the molecular reorientation. In experiments, the careful measurement of diffraction efficiency is carried out automatically by using a microcomputer to investigate the optimal bias for this nonlinear effect in nematic N-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-4-butylaniline films. It is unambiguously shown both by theoretical and experimental results that the optimal bias is decreasing with the increasing of grating period and optical intensity.

Notes: This study reports that the director configuration diagram of a closed cylinder of nematic liquid crystal (CC NLC) with normal orientation at the walls may contain four kinds of stable director configurations. Sample cells were prepared by treating all walls of a closed cylindrical cavity with DMOAP (N,N-dimethyl-N-octadecyl-3- aminopropyltrimethoxysilyl-chloride) and then filling with NLC 5CB. The optical patterns of the CC NLCs were observed between crossed linear polarizers. A theory explaining these observations was developed by calculating the spatial distribution of the nematic director fields. The stable director configurations depend not only on the ratio of the splay and bend Frank elastic constant (K11/K33), but also on the aspect ratio of the cylinder. In general, the occurrence of a transformation between the radial and the hyperbolic type is determined by a critical transformation ratio K11/K33; there is also a critical aspect ratio remarking the transformation between the point and the ring structure. The calculations predict that the characteristic lengths of both the radial and the hyperbolic ring structure are nearly invariant with respect to K11/K33 and the aspect ratio of the cylinder.

Notes: The diffraction efficiency suppression and peak shifting from the Freedericksz threshold voltage are predicted for degenerate four-wave mixing process in a low-frequency ac voltage-biased homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal film. The crucial factor is the twist deformation in the induced phase grating. Significant amounts of diffraction efficiency suppression and peak shift are shown both in numerical and experimental results.

Notes: Optical field induced first-order electric Freedericksz transition and electric bistability in a homogeneously aligned nematic film is first observed. It is experimentally demonstrated that an applied optical field can transform the electric Freedericksz transition from second order to first order. The molecular reorientation as a function of electric field is then characterized by a hysteresis loop which exhibits the electric bistability. The results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
