Summary A polysaccharide producing strain ofBacillus licheniformis was isolated from exudate of raffia palm,Raffia vinifera. The optimum conditions for growth and polysaccharide production have been investigated and established. No appreciable polysaccharide was formed on glucose. It grew best in Czapek-Dox media with sucrose as the carbon source. The polysaccharide has been characterized as a heteropolymer containingd-glucose,d-mannose andd-xylose.
