Notizen: This paper examines and evaluates the applicability of the Miles and Snow organizational strategy, structure and process model to the electricity distribution and supply industry of England and Wales (ESI), and specifically the regional electricity companies (RECs). In the past such generic strategy models have principally been applied to industries that conform to the traditional free-market paradigm, and doubt has been cast upon their applicability in non-traditional environments. This paper argues in contrast that generic strategies are of considerable value in the regulated industries, especially those developing new strategies to address major change, such as the approach of full competition. As a feature of this process, the paper also examines some of the differences and similarities between the ESI and the traditional free-market paradigm. However, having argued for the use of such strategies, it is necessary to make various amendments to enhance the applicability of the model. These amendments and the characteristics of new generic strategies are described.

Notizen: Despite growing evidence that large UK organisations are increasingly incorporating the environment into corporate strategy, there continues to be considerable scepticism as to whether this is leading to any meaningful action to reduce industry's environmental impact. One possible explanation is the existence of a "gap" between policy formulation and implementation, and the authors suggest that this may be due to a failure on the part of business to ensure congruence between organisational context, values and capability. Utilising data drawn from a recent survey of corporate environmental policies and practices, the authors explore the interaction of external and internal factors with regard to policy development, and search for evidence of congruence. They conclude that very often policy formulation takes little consideration of the organisation's capability to implement environmental strategies, and suggest that until this question is taken seriously, a gulf will always exist between what companies aim to do, and what they actually achieve.

Notizen: Examines the weaknesses of the current UK and US definitions of an asset. Presents an argument for them to be updated to include valuable internally created intangible assets, such as brands and software, which currently fall outside the scope of them.

Notizen: Aims to disseminate the findings of an investigation into the perception of women as managers and the obstacles that they face in the workplace. Identifies the issues and problems faced by women from "multinational corporations" and the impact of operating across national boundaries. The three key issues are age, gender, and family responsibility. Reports on evidence found from conducting "personal interviews" and "focus group" discussions, showing that the ensuing implications have had a significant impact on women in the workplace. Argues that little has changed in terms of employers' perception of working women so far. The study was supported from funds provided via the European Union under the European Social Fund Scheme.

Notizen: Discusses the findings of a recent study into the development of women managers, in the field of information technology (IT). Addresses the key question as to why few women are entering IT. Provides an insight into the perception of women working in IT, and their role in this "fast-growing" technological area. Identifies four obstacles - gender stereotypes and attitudes, family responsibility, working time constraints, and lack of confidence - that have had a restrictive impact on the careers of female managers employed in this field. Albeit each of these obstacles has an overlap of common characteristics, it was decided that it would be better to explore each in individual context for the purpose of clarity. Also evaluates evidence taken from "personal interviews" carried out with 46 female delegates enrolled on a specialised IT training course, and 17 female managers from various companies. Uses structured questionnaire to elicit and record this data.

Notizen: Utilises findings that relate to Chinese negotiation skills that can be used primarily as a guide for female Western negotiators wishing to do business with the Chinese. Evidence comes from observations and group discussions conducted with 31 female Chinese managers. Results show that there is a lot to consider when negotiating with the Chinese. The eight key characteristics which form an endemic part of Chinese culture are face, trust, friendship, ambiguity, patience, Guanxi networks, status, and Chinese protocols. Examines the gender impact of these characteristics on the negotiation process and assesses the ensuing implications for Western negotiators. Evidence suggests that first six characteristics are gender neutral while the latter two are gender biased. The women enrolled on the management programmes provided a "birds-eye-view" into the interactive behaviour and social upbringing of Chinese women, thus giving an insight into Chinese culture and customs. However, it is imperative to acknowledge that being a successful Chinese negotiator requires an "open minded" approach and heightened awareness of cultural differences.

Notizen: This article seeks to highlight the realities, myths and polarisation of western and Chinese management styles. The article establishes the need to develop an understanding of the underpinning culture and traditions which differentiate management styles. The article provides personal examples of the authors' experience in straddling the cultural boundary of West and East. The article further advocates a model for establishing the training needs of western and Chinese managers in preparing them to deal with China's entry into the World Trade Organisation. Internal disparity in China and Europe is briefly highlighted and the article suggests the need to focus on the potential for comparison in cross-cultural negotiations and management. The article proposes a guiding principals model, which has been developed using three dimensions: "sense of belonging", "culture and religion" and "management analysis and language".

Notizen: As organizations are downsized, re-engineering and the span of control inflates, the need for self-regulation and control grows. This need has seen the growth in the provision of internal auditing services in the UK. Demonstrates the linkage between ensuring quality by benchmarking, and the required vehicle for understanding the internal audit development needs of UK organizations. Shows the requirements by the use of nine organizations where internal auditing has been developed to give the organization a competitive advantage. Focuses on the critical success elements that are required by developing internal audit departments.

Notizen: This paper presents the findings of a literature review and survey conducted on sport sponsorship in the UK. The paper seeks to establish relevant material published that addresses the issue of the transferability of techniques and skills from sports to business. The findings of the literature review highlighted the close relationship between the two mediums. The results of the sponsorship questionnaire showed evidence of the transference of mutually beneficial skills between the organisations offering the assistance, and the sporting organisation receiving the funding. The survey indicated that a majority of sports sponsoring organisations offered more than just monetary assistance to their beneficiaries. Sponsors also assisted with the management of specific events, and operated the complicated software and computer equipment required for the smooth running of the sporting activity. These organisations supplied the sports with key personnel, and highly skilled staff who were experts in their respective fields in marketing, public relations, corporate hospitality, and management.

Notizen: Abstract We have designed and implemented a controllable software architecture for a Video‐on‐Demand (VOD) server. With the proposed software architecture, many system design issues can be investigated. For example, we studied several disk striping schemes in the storage subsystem and examined the impact of the disk striping schemes on the utilization of system resources. In the processing component, we observed that additional concurrent video streams can be supported by using efficient memory interleaving. Buffering with a large memory space in the processing subsystem is a common technique to alleviate the latency variance of accessing different system components. By employing user‐level control and scheduling, the variance can be decreased thereby reducing the resulting buffer space needed for each video stream. In the network subsystem, we adopted a server‐driven approach for investigating MPEG‐2 video delivery over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. The VOD server controls the pace of video transmission and reduces the complexity of the client. Since the client has limited buffer space (due to cost considerations), we have reduced the buffer requirement by regulating the transmission based on timing information embedded in the MPEG‐2 streams. Our research and experimental results are based on a VOD server which is currently under construction. The prototype server is based on an SGI shared‐memory multiprocessor with a mass storage system consisting of RAID‐3 disk arrays. Using 30 RAID‐3 disk arrays, preliminary experimental results show that the prototype server can potentially support more than 360 high‐quality video streams with careful design and coordination of the different system components.
