Notes: Using a set of functions with linear span that is dense in L2(R2N), a simple proof is constructed of the result (discovered and proved by Várilly and Gracia-Bondia recently [J. Math. Phys. 28, 2390 (1987)]) that the Wigner transformation is of order 24 and that its sixth power is the inverse Fourier transform (or Fourier cotransform).

Notes: The known general formula for the Clebsch–Gordan coefficients of the three-dimensional rotation group involves one summation that results in explicit summation-free expressions for the coefficients where either one of the angular momenta is the sum of the other two or the magnetic quantum number corresponding to one of the angular momenta takes its maximum value in magnitude. By using very different techniques, explicit expressions for the coefficients 〈 j1, 0; j2, 0|| j, 0〉, 〈 j1, (1)/(2) ; j2, − (1)/(2) || j, 0〉 are also obtained where the integral or half-integral nature of the j's is indicated by the magnetic quantum number involved. Here the expressions depend upon whether j1+ j2+ j is an even or an odd integer. For these coefficients, the magnetic quantum numbers involved take their minimum value in magnitude. By using the recursion relation for the coefficients of the form 〈 j1, m, j2, −m, || j, 0〉, these coefficients can be calculated in terms of the above known ones provided the explicit value of the coefficient 〈 j1, 1; j2, −1|| j, 0〉 is known, where j1+ j2+ j is an odd integer. (The recursion relation for these coefficients in terms of 〈 j1, 0; j2, −1|| j, 0〉 becomes a triviality since 〈 j1, 0; j2, 0|| j, 0〉 vanishes when j1+ j2+ j is an odd integer.)The main purpose of this paper is to give an explicit expression for the coefficients 〈 j1, 1; j2, −1|| j, 0〉, where j1+ j2+ j is an odd integer. This expression is obtained by using a complicated transformation between hypergeometric functions, which seems to have been neglected so far. For the coefficients where the magnetic quantum numbers have their minimum value in magnitude, this transformed expression becomes summation-free and the explicit values of the three already known coefficients and the fourth so far unknown are obtained. Further study of this transformation may be useful on its own because it provides a link between very different types of expressions. For completeness, explicit expressions for the coefficient 〈 j1, 1; j2, −1|| j, 0〉, where j1+ j2+ j is an even integer, and of 〈 j1, 1; j2, 1|| j, 2〉 and 〈 j1, (1)/(2) ; j2, − (1)/(2) || j, 0〉, where j1+ j2+ j is an even or an odd integer, are given.

Notes: In this paper, simple analytic expressions for the radial functions r ll1l2( f (r)) and Glnl1l2( f (r)), which appear in the expressions for Ym1l1(∇) fl2(r) Ym2l2(rˆ) and ∇2nYm1l1(∇) fl2(r) Ym2l2(rˆ) when expressed as linear combinations of Yml(rˆ), where Ym1l1(∇) is obtained from the solid harmonic Ym1l1(r) =r l1Ym1l1(rˆ), are derived by replacing x, y, and z in its representation as a polynomial of degree l1 by ∂/∂x, ∂/∂y, and ∂/∂z, respectively.Writing r ll1l2( f (r)) =r ll1l20(r) f (r) and Glnl1l2( f (r)) =Glnl1l20(r) f (r), the expression for r ll1l20(r) (Glnl1l20(r)) is found to be (2/r)l1((2/r)l1+2n) times a product of commuting factors containing the single operator 1/2 r(d/dr) and not two noncommuting operators r and (1/r)(d/dr) in the many equivalent previously obtained results which are thus synthesized in this approach. Also, expressions for these operators manifest the symmetries in the problem. In addition, a simple connection Glnl1l20(r) =r ll1+2nl20(r) between these two operators and the corresponding radial functions Glnl1l2( f (r)) and r ll1l2( f (r)) are found.

Notes: We obtain expansions for the eigenvalues Cp of the invariant operators (Casimir operators) of the general linear, and the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras in terms of products of suitably defined graded power sums Pk. The resulting expressions are closed and provide unified formulas for computing the Cp's for those superalgebras as well as their corresponding Lie algebras. The formulas are remarkably simple to suggest that the power sums used in this text could play a more basic role in the understanding of the pattern of the expansion coefficients. Explicit illustrations are given for the various series for p≤8.

Notes: Summary A simple method of assaying activity of a soil deaminase is described. The substrate used in the assay, 1,2-diamino-4-nitrobenzene, is red in colour, intensity decreasing with deamination of the benzene ring. This colour changes was used as the basis for a new assay in which substrate was incubated in a buffered soil slurry for 20 h, after which, the amount of substrate deaminated was determined. The method is simple and precise and, unlike existing soil deaminase assays, does not rely on measurement of the NH 4 + product. After demonstration of enzyme kinetics, the assay was used to assess differences in deaminase activities in soils of differing crop-cover and N-status.

Notes: Summary Starting from a regular classM, one can construct the upper radicalU M of the classM in a category which is like that of associative, alternative or not necessarily associative rings, or that of Lie rings. It turns out that in quite a few cases the upper radical is hereditary. (cf.Suliński [7], Rjabuhin [6], Armendariz [2], Szász—Wiegandt [8]).W. G. Leavitt has suggested the problem: Give a necessary and sufficient condition to be satisfied by the regular classM so that the upper radical classU M ofM is hereditary. In the present paper we shall give such a necessary and sufficient condition. If the classM satisfies an even stronger condition, then theU M-semisimple objects are subdirectly embeddable in a (direct) product ofM-objects. Also a necessary and sufficient condition is given which assures that eachU M-semisimple object can be subdirectly embedded in a (direct) product ofM-objects.

Notes: Some new polyamidoethers have been synthesized by condensation reaction of N,N'-dichloroacetyl-1,4-phenylene-diamine with bisphenols (4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol, 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone, 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfide, and 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl) in N-methylpyrrolidone medium using DB-24-Crown-8 as a phase-transfer catalyst. The structure of these polymers has been characterized by infrared (i.r.) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Kinetic method of thermal decomposition of these polymers and their 2% mixture with polyvinylchloride (PVC) has been studied.
