    Notes: Abstract This paper discusses two schemes for doing finite element K calibration in the frequency domain. The baseline scheme uses the definition of K as a limit toward the crack tip. The limiting process requires using a very fine mesh around the crack tip making the scheme computationally very expensive. It is shown that the behavior of K as a function of frequency is very similar to a modal response. Taking advantage of this, a more efficient scheme involves a modal analysis of the cracked sheet and scaling the response to that of the static stress intensity. In this way, only a static K calibration need be performed. All the examples shown are for a frequency range spanning multiple resonances and with two levels of damping.

    Notes: Abstract A Global/Local model is developed for the calculation of dynamic stress intensity history resulting from the impact of a double cantilever beam. The model separates the Global structural dynamics from the Local crack tip zone dominated by singular stresses. The Global model, consisting of connected waveguides, describes the structural dynamics using spectral elements. The Local model, describing the crack tip behavior, is based on an application of the J-integral that converts the dynamic structural resultants directly into strain energy release rate. Previous work used this approach successfully for pure mode II deformation; the present paper extends the modeling to mode I and mixed mode deformation. Of special concern is the local modeling of the elasticity and mass in the vicinity of the crack tip; structural mechanics modeling is combined with Hamilton's principle to properly address this question. The accuracy of this approach is assessed by comparing it to a two dimensional finite element analysis.

    Notes: Abstract This paper suggests a framework whereby a more rational approach to birefringent phenomenon and the optical constitutive relations can be taken. Starting with Maxwell's equations for a general medium, the assumptions, one after the other, are stated in order to get a manageable theory. A simple two-optic-coefficient theory is evolved which purports to have general application. Its relation to the ad-hoc theories is shown with some published experimental data re-examined.

    Notes: Conclusion The nonlinearity observed in the flow-birefringent data can be explained by considering a properly formulated constitutiv relation, and is seen to be a natural consequence of the representation of a tensor function. The optical relation proposed is valid for a general threedimensional flow and, in addition, gives a meaning to the isoclinics in terms of the strain-rate components.
