Notes: In an attempt to clarify the function of l-aspartic acid and culture conditions in aspartate ammonia lyase induction, experiments were carried out on aspartase formation in Bacillus cereus cells. The enzyme was produced by microorganisms in response to l-aspartic acid, which is catabolized by direct deamination to fumarate. Enzyme synthesis by B. cereus was associated with physiological growth stages, which was confirmed by use of the protein synthesis inhibitor, chloramphenicol, whereas it did not influence synthesis when it was added directly to the reactor batch containing a biotransformation system. Aspartase activity was evaluated in a batch reactor by biotransformation of fumaric acid into l-aspartic acid catalyzed by whole B. cereus cells. The culture medium for the strain was optimized, which increased the initial aspartase activity threefold. B. cereus cells showed optimal aspartase activity at late log phase. Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to develop an immunological model of avian Aspergillosis by studying the humoral response of pigeons toAspergillus fumigatus antigens. Immunization was performed by administering weekly injections ofA. fumigatus extracts for 70 days (10 weeks). A new booster injection was given 270 days (9 months) following the last immunization. Results showed an earlyAspergillus-specific humoral immunoresponse which reached a maximum level at 42–63 days (6–9 weeks) post-immunization. Using the ELISA method, it could be observed thatA. fumigatus-specific IgG became elevated in the 2nd week and reached a maximum titre at 63rd day (9th week). In contrast,A. fumigatus-specific IgM levels appeared early showing maximum levels at the 2nd week, after which they declined despite the maintenance of antigenic stimulation. Termination of immunization resulted in the decrease of specific humoral immunoresponse with minimal levels of specific antibodies detectable 210 days (7 months) later. A booster injection given at 270 days (9 months) induced a very fastAspergillus-specific IgM and IgG immunoresponse, reaching levels of antibodies similar to those observed during the immunization period.

Notes: Abstract From co-precipitated powder samples, the solid state reactions occurring between room temperature and 1500° C in the ZrO2-CaO system have been studied. At low temperatures, compositions containing 〈 25 mol% CaO show a complex picture of phase transformation and ordering in the system. From the obtained results the following singular reactions have been established. (i) Tetragonal zirconia solid solution decomposes eutectoidally at 7 mol% CaO and 1048 ± 4° C into monoclinic zirconia solid solution and calcium zirconate (CZ). (ii) Cubic zirconia solid solution undergoes a eutectoidal decomposition at 17.5 mol% Cao and 1080 ±20° C into tetragonal solid solution + calcium zirconate. (iii) The monoclinic ordered phase, CaZr4O9 (Φ1), ), undergoes an order-disorder transformation into cubic zirconia solid solution at 1232 ± 5° C. (iv) Cubic zirconia solid solution undergoes a eutectoidal decomposition into two ordered phases, Φ1 + Φ2 at 21 mol% CaO and 1200 ± 10°C. (v) Hexagonal ordered phase Ca6Zr19O44 (Φ2) decomposes peritectoidally into cubic zirconia solid solution + calcium zirconate at 1360 ± 10° C. The two ordered phases Φ1 and Φ2 seem to be unstable below ≈ 1100° C. By using DTA, X-ray diffraction and SEM techniques, the extent of the tetragonal and cubic zirconia solid solution fields have been established. From the above experimental results a new tentative phase diagram is given for the ZrO2-rich region of the system, ZrO2-CaO.

Notes: Abstract The solubility limits of MgO in tetragonal zirconia were studied by combining the differential thermal analysis data and X-ray disappearing phase method. From these experiments a eutectoid reaction, tetragonal ZrO2 solid solution → monoclinic ZrO2 solid solution + MgO, at 1120±10 °C and 1.6±0.2 mol% MgO was established. The solubility of MgO in tetragonal ZrO2 diminished as the temperature increased, and at 1700 °C the solubility was less than 0.5 mol% MgO. The extent of the cubic zirconia solid solution single field was determined by using precise lattice parameter measurements and SEM observations. In this way an invariant eutectoid point, cubic ZrO2 solid solution → tetragonal ZrO2 solid solution + MgO, was located at 1420±10 °C and 14.8±0.5 mol% MgO.

Notes: Abstract  Germplasm characterization is an important link between the conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources. A total of 134 accessions from six Capsicumspecies maintained at the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center were characterized using 110 randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Ten pairs of potentially duplicated accessions were identified. Multidimensional scaling analysis of the genetic distances among accessions resulted in clustering corresponding to a previous species assignment except for six accessions. Diagnostic RAPDs were identified which discriminate among the Capsicumspecies. The diagnostic markers were employed for improved taxonomic identification of accessions since many morphological traits used in the identification of Capsicumare difficult to score. Three Capsicumaccessions, misclassified based on morphological traits, were reassigned species status based on diagnostic RAPDs. Three accessions, not previously classified, were assigned to a species based on diagnostic RAPDs. Definitive conclusions about the species assignment of three other accessions were not possible. The level of diversity between Capsicum annuumaccessions from the genebank and the breeding program were compared and no differences were observed either for RAPD variation or diversity. The utilization of genetic resources as a source of variance for useful traits in the breeding program may be the reason for the similarity of these two groups.

Notes: Abstract The results of a multicenter study on the distribution of dermatophyte species in the metropolitan area of Barcelona (Spain) are presented. In the period 1977–1983, 638 dermatophyte strains were isolated from tineas by three different mycological laboratories. Zoophilic strains were prevalent comprising 64.4% of the isolates. T. mentagrophytes var. granulosum was isolated in 51% of the cases. A signigicant drop in the prevalence of T. tonsurans and T. violaceum was noted. Important variations were observed in dermatophyte distribution in relation to other geographical areas of Spain.

Notes: Abstract The effects of grinding on a stoichiometric mixture of LiOH · H2O and γ-FeOOH were studied. It was found that, in the course of grinding, losses of structural water occurred and a phase structurally related to disordered α-LiFeO2 was formed. X-ray diffraction data suggest the occurrence of an ordered phase as intermediate and both γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3 were undetected during the comminution process. A prolonged mechanical treatment of this mixture originated an elimination of Li+ from the α-LiFeO2 structure and the appearance of the spinel phase, α-LiFe5O8. Additionally, the mechanical activation of a sample of α-LiFeO2 prepared at high temperatures also leads to a similar rearrangement of cations. The structural transformation is explained with the help of a model in which the vacancies of Li+ created during grinding promote the migration of the Fe3+ ions from octahedral to tetrahedral sites.
