Notes: Abstract A new type of cosmic virial theorem is derived, representing a relation among the two-point and three-point galaxy correlation functions and the mean square relative peculiar velocity 〈v 2(r)〉 averaged over pairs of galaxies separated by distancer. The two correlation functions seem to be fairly well known, but 〈v 2(r)〉 at best is only very roughly estimated from available data. It might be possible to improve the estimate through a systematic program of redshift measurements in sample areas. If so, the cosmic virial theorem might yield an interesting measure of the mean mass density due to galaxies.

Notes: [Auszug] Observations of galaxy clustering indicate that the mean mass density is only about one-third of that predicted by the popular Einstein–de Sitter cosmological model. Theory and observation can be reconciled if there has been large-scale segregation of galaxies from mass, but the gravitational ...

Notes: [Auszug] PEEBLES ETAL. REPLY - A central point of our review article is that the measured properties of the thermal cosmic background radiation seem to require that the Universe has expanded from a state denser and hotter than it is now1. We are glad that Arp et al. have come to accept this conclusion. ...

Notes: [Auszug] The relativistic hot Big Bang model for the expanding Universe has yielded a set of interpretations and successful predictions that substantially outnumber the elements used in devising the theory, with no well-established empirical contradictions. It is reasonable to conclude that this standard ...

Notes: [Auszug] Although astronomers can reliably measure the relative distances of distant galaxies, attempts to calibrate the absolute cosmic distance scale remain controversial. Nevertheless, the sources of possible error are now clearly defined and a convincing result seems to be within ...

Notes: [Auszug] A comparison of the merits of five general theories for the origin of galaxies and large-scale structure in the Universe with 38 observational constraints from extragalactic astronomy produces no clear winner. Two theories, cold dark matter in an inflationary cosmology and baryonic dark matter in a ...

Notes: [Auszug] Modern theories of the origin of large-scale structure depend on a variety of stimulating new ideas about the physics of the early Universe. In the absence of clean observational tests one can obtain figures of merit for the theories by counting and weighing the plausibility of each of those ...

Notes: [Auszug] A velocity autocorrelation function is vc(r)2= 〈 v(x).v(x+r)〉 (1) where v(r) is the galaxy peculiar velocity field. It is thought that uc(0) ~ 500 km s"1 and uc(/) = 0.5t;c(0) at coherence length /~ 50-100 Mpc. This would account for the fact that the Local Group and all our neighbours at ...

Notes: [Auszug] RECENTLY, Miss Kaufman stated1 that the newly discovered microwave radio background2 at 7-3 cm wavelength may be emission from ionized intergalactic hydrogen, rather than primordial fireball radiation from the big bang3. In this new picture the intergalactic hydrogen would have a temperature of ...

Notes: [Auszug] Astronomical observations now reach far enough back in time, in enough depth and detail, to reveal the history of galaxies since their formation. The early Universe contained a network of gas clouds that filled much of the space between the young galaxies, where stars were forming at a high rate. ...
