Notes: [Auszug] By the use of tissue cultures we have been able to demonstrate the persistence of adenovirus type 5 in the spleen of adult rabbits for periods up to 8 weeks after inoculation. In a representative experiment, six rabbits were inoculated intravenously with 109*2 50 per cent tissue culture doses of ...

Notes: [Auszug] LACK of pathogenicity for laboratory animals is generally accepted as one of the criteria for the characterization of adenoviruses of human origin1-3. However, symptomless infection of rabbits by adenovirus type 5 has been described by Pereira and Kelly4 and evidence that several adenovirus types ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE rapid rise in the standard of living of much JL of the world's population over the past few decades has caused many countries to give anxious consideration to their future water supplies. Even in Great Britain the problems of water supply and demand are requiring increasing attention1. In ...

Notes: Before commenting on the situation in separate countries, it is useful to look briefly at the over-all state of natural resources science in Africa. This was reviewed in detail six years ago at a U.N.E.S.C.O. conference in Lagos and there has been no major change in the picture of fragmentation of effort, with as yet no effective machinery for co-operation. Some rather slow pro. gress was made by the C.C.T.A. among the countries south of the Sahara towards the co-ordination and sharing of scarce scientific resources, but this initiative has not yet been effectively regained by its successor organisation, the Scientific and Technical Research Committee of the Organisation of African Unity.

Notes: [Auszug] Human adenovirus type 5 (Ad 5) was propagated in mono-layers of KB cells, and the soluble antigens were extracted as previously described6. Briefly, fluoro-carbon extracts of infected cells were centrifuged in caesium chloride density gradients to band the virus, and the material remaining above ...

Notes: [Auszug] We describe here the crystallization of the hexon of the human adenovirus type 5. The prototype strain of this virus (AD 75) was propagated in HeLa cells, and the viral components were extracted from infected cells as described previously5'6. Extracts of infected cells treated with fluoro-carbon ...

Notes: [Auszug] The virus strain A/duck/Germany/1868/68 was isolated at the Institute for Bird Diseases, Ludwig-Maximilians University, from ducks with a respiratory disease8. No human influenza virus strains had ever been handled in the laboratory. On arrival at the World Influenza Centre the strain was ...

Notes: Summary The chemical composition of cork from Quercus suber L. was determined for virgin cork and for reproduction cork. Average chemical composition of virgin cork is: ash 0.7%, total extractives 15.3%, suberin 38.6%, lignin 21.7% and polysaccharides 18.2%. The carbohydrate composition shows that glucose represents 50.6% of all monosaccharides, xylose 35.0%, arabinose 7.0% and galactose and mannose, respectively, 3.6% and 3.4%. Reproduction cork has a composition similar to virgin cork. For the cases studied, reproduction cork had however less extractives and a higher amount of suberin. Significant differences were found for the chemical composition of virgin cork in relation to location of extractives and polysaccharide content. The between-tree variability was large and a variation within the tree was also recorded.

Notes: Summary Image analysis techniques were used on cork surfaces of transverse sections of planks and multivariate analysis was applied to differentiate pores (lenticular channels) from important defects such as nail (horizontal and vertical) and insect galeries. The discriminant analysis showed that the variables area, perimeter, specific length and width, diameters in the radial and in the tangential direction, as well as the optical density could be combined in three discriminant functions that could make the classification. Defect specific classification functions gave good results for the automatic classification of pores, insect galeries and horizontal nail (error 〈10%), and acceptable for vertical nail (20% error).
