    Notes: Summary Two formulas, using Taylor's series expansion method, have been developed by means of which the second vertical derivative of gravity field may be computed at any point in the horizontal plane of observation. A comparative study of the resolving powers of different approaches by performing numerical and filter response tests suggests that the formulas provide a definite improvement over many existing methods.

    Notes: Summary An algorithm, suitable for digital computer application, has been developed for rapid gravity interpretation of sedimentary basin. A discrete linear variable density contrast pattern over the constant density contrast has been preferred to obtain the structural configuration of the basin. The present algorithm, with slight modification, can be used for calculation of isostatic root increment below the mountain. An interpretation of the structure of Godavari Valley, India has been made using this algorithm.

    Notes: Summary Analytical expressions for the weight coefficients of the upward and downward continuation, and first and second derivative and their downward continuation operations have been obtained from their corresponding theoretical amplitude response functions in cut off frequency region using filter theory.     Notes: Summary The various data processing techniques (downward continuation, first and second derivatives and their downward continuation) used in gravity interpretation, are analogous to different types of linear filtering operations whose theoretical filter (amplitude) responses can be derived from $$(u^2 + v^2 )^{N/2} \exp (d\sqrt {u^2 + v^2 } )$$ by suitably choosingN andd, whereu andv are angular frequencies in two perpendicular directions,d the height or depth of continuation in unit of grid interval; andN denotes the order of the vertical derivative. By incorporating a mathematical smoothing function, $$e^{ - \lambda (u^2 + v^2 )} $$ (λ being the smoothing parameter) in the theoretical filter response function, it has been possible, by selecting a suitable value of smoothing parameter, to establish an approximate equivalence of the effect of the mathematical smoothing with the inherent smoothing introduced, because of the numerical approximation (approximation error) for practically all data-processing techniques. This approximate equivalence leads to a generalized method of computing sets of weight coefficients for various data-processing techniques from filter response matching method. Several sets of weight coefficients thus have been computed with different smoothing parameter. The amplitude response curves of the various existing sets of weight coefficients have also been calculated for assessing the quality of the approximation in achieving the desired filtering operation.

    Notes: The curing of epoxy-amine polymer has been modeled by the reaction of functional groups, and the mole balance of these is governed by a set of six nonlinear differential equations. In this work, we have first developed a complete analytical solution for isothermal curing. For nonisothermal curing, we have divided the domain of hydroxyl group concentration β into small increments Δβ and adopted our analytical results for this domain. In addition, we solved the energy balance equation analytically and obtained the temperature rise for Δβ. We have compared our results with those obtained from the Runge Kutta numerical solutions. We have shown that our semianalytical technique is about a thousand times more efficient and faster.

    Notes: Abstract Fatigue tests conducted on “Scotchply-1000” under constant stress range ΔS or constant strain range Δ∈ gave essentially the same life when the stress range was normalized by the ultimate strength (ΔS/σ u) and the strain range was normalized by the fracture strain (Δ∈/∈ f). Fatigue cycling of either type produces a progressive decrease in the modulus of elasticity which is a linear function of log N. An empirical relation of the type used to predict the low-cycle fatigue of metals was selected to predict the low-cycle fatigue behaviour of GFRP materials. Agreement between the experimental results and the predictions of the empirical relation was found to be good. A general method of evaluating the constants from a limited number of fatigue tests has been suggested. Further generalization of the constants and their correlation with the tensile properties of the material may be possible with the availability of more data on the fatigue of composite materials.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, a methodology is developed for the design of a weight-efficient, composite, curved-stiffened panel, loaded in compression well beyond the initial buckling load. A stiffened fuselage panel is designed to satisfy typical design load criteria for the moderately loaded sections of a typical fighter aircraft. Several stiffened panels are fabricated. Some panels are tested to determine experimentally the static strength and the remaining panels are subjected first to severe fatigue loading and then tested statically to determine the effect of fatigue loading on the postbuckling strengh. The experimentally observed behavior is compared with analytical predictions. The weight efficiencies of buckled and unbuckled construction are also compared.

    Notes: Abstract An approximate strain-optic law has been derived for photoelastic analysis of orthotropic model materials. Principal-strain difference and the direction of major principal strain can be obtained from only two photoelastic measurements (isochromatic-fringe order and isoclinic angle) by means of this strain-optic law. Limited experiments on models subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stresses indicate good agreement between the experimental results and predictions of the strain-optic law. A parametric study demonstrates that the direction of major principal strain can be predicted to within a few degrees of the exact value and that the principalstrain difference can be predicted within ±20 percent for most practical values of degree of orthotropy and ratio of principal strains. The error levels are quite acceptable considering the significant ease in analysis provided by the new law and the fact that such error levels are not uncommon in experimental investigations.
