    Description: Now that extrasolar planets have been found, it is timely to ask whether some of them might be suitable for life. Climatic constraints on planetary habitability indicate that a reasonably wide habitable zone exists around main sequence stars with spectral types in the early-F to mid-K range. However, it has not been demonstrated that planets orbiting such stars would be habitable when biologically-damaging energetic radiation is also considered. The large amounts of UV radiation emitted by early-type stars have been suggested to pose a problem for evolving life in their vicinity. But one might also argue that the real problem lies with late-type stars, which emit proportionally less radiation at the short wavelengths (lambda 〈 200 nm) required to split O2 and initiate ozone formation. We show here that neither of these concerns is necessarily fatal to the evolution of advanced life: Earth-like planets orbiting F and K stars may well receive less harmful UV radiation at their surfaces than does the Earth itself.

    Description: Recent studies of the 3.4 micron C-H stretch absorption feature indicate a strong correlation between it and the 10 micron silicate band over a wide range of extinctions (A(sub v) = 3.9-31 magnitudes), but the relationships between their optical depths and the visual extinction are particularly poorly constrained at intermediate extinctions between 15 and 20 magnitudes. The objective prism survey published by Stephenson may help to alleviate this difficulty. It lists more than 400 extremely red stars lacking molecular absorption bands, suggesting that these are hot blue stars reddened by long path lengths of the Galactic ISM. The intrinsic properties of these stars are unfortunately only loosely constrained, and JHK photometry therefore does not accurately determine the interstellar extinction. Using the POSS I plates, we have attempted to produce self-consistent spectral types, luminosity classes and extinctions for the stars which Stephenson claims to be most heavily reddened. 14 out of 25 sources studied are consistent with OB supergiants. The results are highly sensitive to upper limits in the blue plate, and are not always consistent with Stephenson's claims of much higher reddening than that of a typical member of the Cygnus OB2 association. For the most heavily-reddened sources studied, a B-magnitude based on the faintest measurable value on the blue plate yielded a lower limit of about 9 magnitudes on the extinction.

    Description: The 4.5-4.8 micron spectral region provides two potential diagnostics of radiative or thermal processing of interstellar ices in the environs of embedded stars in molecular clouds. A broad absorption feature centered at 4.62 micron is seen in the spectra of several young stellar objects (YSO's) and attributed to C-N triple bonds in a nitrile or isonitrile. As CN-bearing solids in the laboratory are produced by energetic radiative processing of ices containing nitrogen, detection of this feature in YSO's is taken as evidence for (1) the presence of nitrogen in the unprocessed cloud ices, and (2) evolution of the ice in the vicinity of the embedded source. The adjacent feature at 4.67 micron, identified with solid CO, provides not only quantitative information on CO itself but also indirect evidence for the presence of other species; its position and profile are sensitive to the molecular environment of the CO molecules in the ice mantle, and may be used to constrain both the composition and thermal/radiative history of the ice. One important example is the possibility to detect CO2, which is produced easily in the laboratory by UV irradiation of CO-rich or CH3OH-rich ices. CO embedded in a CO2 matrix gives a characteristic spectral signature distinct from other CO-bearing mixtures investigated to date. We have obtained CO absorption profiles of three young stellar objects in order to investigate their ice mantle composition.

    Description: Researchers spectrum of NGC 4565 is essentially featureless. The absence of the 3.0 micron feature (Tau 3.0 less than 0.05) implies that the extinction to the nucleus does not arise to a significant degree in molecular clouds. Researchers deduce Tau 3.0/A sub V less than 0.01, compared with approx. 0.022 for GC-IRS7. These results support the conclusion (McFadzean et al. 1989) that the 3.0 micron absorption in the GC-IR sources is due to the presence of ice in a (probably single) foreground molecular cloud. The 3.4 micron feature is also weak or absent in the researchers spectrum of NGC 4565 (Tau 3.4 less than or equal to 0.07), hence, Tau 3.4/A sub V less than or equal to 0.016, compared with approx. 0.008 towards GC-IRS7. The absence of the feature in NGC 4565 at the signal-to-noise level of the current observations is consistent with a probable moderate degree of extinction towards the nucleus. The observations of NGC 4565 provide a useful comparison for studies of dust in the Galaxy. Limits have been set on the strengths of the 3.0 and 3.4 micron features in NGC 4565. The absence of 3.0 micron absorption is significant, and supports the view that the feature at this wavelength in the Galactic Centre is due to water-ice absorption in a foreground molecular cloud. The non-detection of the 3.4 micron absorption is less surprising and provides indirect support for the association between this feature and the diffuse interstellar medium. The current spectrum probably represents the best that can be achieved with a single-detector instrument within reasonable integration times. It will clearly be of interest in the future to obtain spectra of higher signal-to-noise, as a positive detection of the 3.4 micron feature in an external galaxy, even at a low level, would be of considerable astrophysical significance.

    Description: Field stars provide an important means for probing undisturbed regions of molecular clouds where icy mantles are most likely to form. Combining observation of field stars with those of protostars provides a comparison of the extent of grain processing in photostellar environments. The Taurus dark cloud provides an ideal environment for the formation of icy mantles as it is free from shocks and bright internal sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Earlier low-resolution observations of the Taurus cloud done by Whittet et al. (1989) showed that about 30 percent of the available CO is depleted on to the grains.

    Description: Models of ionized interstellar C60 predict a strong transition in the 1.2 micrometer region, and two candidate bands have recently been detected in reddened stars. We have searched for the stronger of these bands (at 13175 A) in the Taurus dark cloud complex, to determine its response to the dark-cloud environment. None of the three lines of sight studied (two near the cloud surface, one reaching A(sub V) greater than 20(sup m)) give rise to a detectable band; in one case the equivalent width is a factor of order three below that predicted. Since such behaviour is also shown by the optical Diffuse Interstellar Bands, we suggest that the 13175 A band is a genuine DIB, but we caution against an automatic interpretation in terms of an ionic carrier.

    Description: From new near-infrared photometry and optical and near-infrared polarimetry, we determine the ratio of total-to-selective extinction and the wavelength of maximum polarization for a sample of stars behind molecular clouds at high Galactic latitude. In general, we find that at high latitude, these parameters have values comparable to those observed closer to the Galactic plane. One notable exception is the line of sight towards HD 210121, where unusually small values of these parameters suggest an abundance of small grains in the foreground cloud.

    Description: Clementine color image data and analyses of 778 lunar impact glasses have been used together to suggest that the highlands of the Fra Mauro region consist of a KREEP-rich regolith overlying a feldspathic terrain.     Description: The 4.67 micrometer absorption feature of solid CO is an important signature of grain mantles in molecular clouds. This paper presents new observations of solid CO absorption in the spectra of four infrared sources in and behind the Serpens dark cloud. We also present supplementary 2.0-2.5 micrometer spectra which clarify the nature of selected sources. Solid CO profiles are compared with models based on laboratory data. In common with previous studies of other clouds, we find that the observed profiles are consistent with the presence of two distinct phases of CO-bearing ice, one dominated either by CO itself or by CO mixed with absorption relative to that of the water-ice feature at 3.1 micrometers is unusually high in Serpens: we deduce column densities for CO and H2O in solid form and conclude that the mean CO abundance in dust is 40% of the H2O abundance, compared with values in the range 0%-30% typical of other molecular clouds. On the basis of its 2.0-2.5 micrometer spectrum and near-infrared colors, we deduce the infrared source CK 2 to be a K5-M0 III field star situated behind the Serpens cloud and suffering 40-50 mag of visual extinction. Assuming empirical correlations between extinction and total (gas + dust) CO column density, we estimate the CO depletion (i.e., the fraction of interstellar CO in the line of sight tied up in grains) to be approximately 40% in the intracloud medium of the Serpens cloud, comparable with previous estimates for the Taurus dark cloud, and much higher than that found in the environments of protostellar objects.

    Description: Lunar impact glasses possess the unmodified refractory element ratios of the original fused target materials at the sites of impacts. These target materials are usually regolith. 866 glasses from the Apollo 16 landing site have been analyzed by electron microprobe in this study. These glasses show significant variation and hint at the existence of highland basalt (HB) regolith compositions atypical of the usual HB compositions historically found at the Apollo 16 site. Additionally, a large number of mare glasses have been identified. Clementine color image data have been used to construct iron, titanium, and aluminum maps for comparison with the sample database. These maps suggest that the Apollo 16 landing site is largely composed of anorthositic material and that mare compositions are not found close by. Nine of these impact glasses have been dated by the Ar-40/Ar-39 technique and may be used to constrain the impact history at the Apollo 16 landing site. These results illustrate how lunar impact glasses together with orbital data can provide geochemical constraints on the local and regional geology of the Moon.
