    Description: The northeastern region off Taiwan exhibits a high marine diversity favoured by the influence of northern and subtropical water masses driven by the East China Sea Water and the Kuroshio current (KC), respectively. A total of 87 species of copepods representing 36 genera were identified in present study. Calanoida was the most dominant order, while Temora turbinata (Dana, 1849), Paracalanus parvus (Claus, 1863) and Ditrichocorycaeus affinis (McMurrich, 1916) appeared as most dominant species. However, we noticed the unusual presence of the copepod Calanoides philippinensis Kitou & Tanaka, 1969 in concurrence with the dominant influence of KC, which suggests a larger intrusion of South China Sea (SCS) waters into the northeast Taiwan region. C. philippinensis is an exclusive species of the warm subtropical Pacific waters. Its presence in the northern Taiwan region may reflect a larger intrusion of warm SCS waters. We therefore suggest its potential use as a bioindicator of southern, tropical waters in the northern Taiwan area.

    Description: We examine the effect of typhoons, as potential drivers of nutrient pulse events, on gelatinous carnivore zooplankton. The period investigated spanned from 2007 to 2010, where seasonal abundance and taxonomic composition of the gelatinous zooplankton community was recorded off North Taiwan. Typhoon effects were assessed in the abundance, diversity and species richness of the gelatinous carnivore populations. Significant associations between typhoons and gelatinous carnivores were found in time delays varying from 3 to 25 days, but no association was identified for longer time intervals. Generally, a decrease in species richness occurred during the summer season, and this was accentuated in 2008, shortly after typhoons events. We hypothesize that typhoons might act as resource pulse triggers probably enhancing open niches for opportunistic carnivore zooplankton groups.

    Description: Highlights: • Spring and autumn copepod assemblages are depicted in the northeast South China Sea. • Copepod assemblages are partially driven by temperature in the SCS. • S. subtenuis and A. negligens are indicative of the South China Sea central gyre. • We provide a synoptic picture of the copepod community structure in the SCS We investigated the influence of permanent oceanographic features in structuring copepod assemblages in the northern South China Sea during the inter-monsoon transition periods, spring and autumn. A total of 25 families, 48 genera and 88 species, were recorded, as well as a decrease in species richness along with the seasonal temperature decrease. We show that copepod assemblages are influenced by quasi-permanent oceanographic conditions governing the Northeastern South China Sea, i.e. China Coastal Current and the Kuroshio Current intrusion. This study provides a synoptic picture of the seasonal changes in the community structure of copepods during spring and autumn in the northern South China Sea.
