Notes: Summary In the Wadden Sea, in total, 93 species of macrofaunal benthic invertebrates are threatened in at least one subregion. Of these, 72 species are threatened in the entire area and are therefore placed on the trilateral Red List. 7 species are (probably) extinct in the entire Wadden Sea area. The status of 9 species of macrofaunal invertebrates is critical, 13 species are (probably) endangered, the status of 25 species is (probably) vulnerable and of 17 species (probably) susceptible.

Notes: Abstract The potential role of competition for space in a community depends on the arrangement of interaction relationships. A survey (255 m2) of the interactions between corals (Scleractinia) on a Caribbean reef (depth 10–30 m) indicated the outcome of 17–35% of the aggressive and defensive interactions to be unpredictable. Experiments on the reef (depth 7–13 m) with pairs of interacting corals — Madracis mirabilis (Duchassing & Michelotti), Agaricia agaricites (L), Montastrea annularis (Ellis & Solander), Eusmilia fastigiata (Pallas) — showed that, after the initial contest through extracoelenteric digestion, there are at least two additional processes which can result in a reversal of dominance: interference by epifauna and sweeper tentacle development. Moreover, the impact of extracoelenteric digestion and the extent of sweeper tentacle development varied over the surface of the corals. Employing laboratory and field experiments to distinguish between the impact of extracoelenteric digestion, epifauna behaviour and sweeper tentacles, we show the three processes combined to explain the coral interaction process in toto. The outcome of the interaction process on the reef depends on numerous, partly unpredictable, variables, including mode of contact and effects of position. Consequently, patterns of community organization resulting from spatial competition will be slow to emerge and easily erased prematurely by disturbances.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers the problem of minimizing the schedule length of a two-machine shop in which not only can a job be assigned any of the two possible routes, but also the processing times depend on the chosen route. This problem is known to be NP-hard. We describe a simple approximation algorithm that guarantees a worst-case performance ratio of 2. We also present some modifications to this algorithm that improve its performance and guarantee a worst-case performance ratio of 3/2.

Anschließend wird ein Verfahren angegeben für die Bestimmung einer Blackwell-optimalen Politik.
Notes: Summary This paper deals with a finite-state, finiteaction discrete-time Markov decision model. A linear programming procedure is developed for the computation of optimal policies over the entire range of the discount factor. Furthermore, a procedure is presented for the computation of a Blackwell optimal policy.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we analyse the effect of a cutoff transaction size on the average inventory cost in a simple newsboy setting. It is assumed that customers with an order larger than a prespecified cutoff transaction size are satisfied in an alternative way, against additional cost. For compound Poisson demand with discrete order sizes, we show how to determine the average cost and an optimal cutoff transaction size. Because the computational effort to calculate the exact cost is quite large, we also consider an approximate model. By approximating the distribution of the total demand during a period by the normal distribution one can determine an expression for the average cost function that solely depends on the cutoff transaction size. A significant advantage of this approximation is that we can solve problems of any size. The quality of using the normal approximation is evaluated through a number of numerical experiments, which show that the approximate results are satisfactory.

Notes: Abstract In several species of bivalve molluscs recruitment is more successful in a summer after a cold than after a mild winter. Results of a long-term monitoring program on Balgzand, a 50-km2 tidal-flat area in the westernmost part of the Wadden Sea, included a significantly negative relationship between winter temperatures and subsequent densities of Macoma balthica recruits in August. We show that this correlation may have arisen from two winter-temperature related processes: 1. Numbers of eggs spawned in April (both per female and per m2) were higher after cold than after mild winters. Results of experiments showed that this is due to higher body weights in late winter/early spring after cold than after mild winters, resulting from lower rates of weight loss at low than at high winter temperatures. 2. Densities of juvenile shrimps Crangon crangon on the tidal flats were significantly lower in springs after cold than after mild winters. Shrimps are important predators of post-larval just-settled Macoma. Numbers of Macoma recruits per spawned egg were generally between 0.001 and 0.0001 and were significantly higher at low than at high shrimp densities in late-spring. We conclude that the latter process was the decisive one.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we adapt the well-known parametric approachfrom fractional programming to solvea class of fractional programs with a noncompact feasible region.Such fractional problems belong to an important class ofsingle component preventive maintenance models. Moreover, for a special but important subclass we showthat the subproblems occurring in this parametric approachare easy solvable. To solve the problem directly we also propose for a relatedsubclass a specialized version of the bisection method. Finally, we present some computational results for these twomethods applied to an inspection model and a minimal repair modelhaving both a unimodal failure rate.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we investigate the conditions under which the marginal cost approach of Refs. 1–3 holds. As observed in Ref. 4, the validity of the marginal cost approach gives rise to a useful framework of single-component maintenance optimization models, which covers almost all models used in practice. For the class of unimodal finite-valued marginal cost functions, we show that these optimization models are easy to solve.
