Description: A faunistic study of the family Haleciidae from the Strait of Gibraltar and nearby areas has been made; seven species are described, figured and discussed. Information about the zoogeographical distribution, and conditions of substrates are contributed. A key to distinguish the species of this family from the seas of the Iberian Peninsula is presented, and the Iberian Haleciidae are compared with those from the Mediterranean and the British Isles.

Description: Forty leptolid species are described from the north-eastern Atlantic (Macaronesian area and the coasts of Mauritania and Morocco) and additional data are given for 44 leptolids described in previous reports. Two new species of Hydractinia and one new species of Zygophylax are described. Zygophylax echinata Calder & Vervoort, 1998 has been synonymized with Zygophylax sagamiensis Hirohito, 1983. The geographical boundaries of several species have been extended amongst which some (Hydractinia multitentaculata Millard, 1975; Hydractinia marsupialia Millard, 1975, Hydrocorella africana Stechow, 1921) that were hitherto considered to be endemic to South African oceanic waters. Halecium sessile Norman, 1867, turned up in the CANCAP collections after the publication of the report on Haleciidae from CANCAP (Medel & Vervoort, 2000) and is described here. All material described in the present report is preserved in the collections of the National Museum of Natural History Naturalis, Leiden, the Netherlands; the collection numbers of the samples and those of the microslide preparations are given in the text.

Description: Twenty-four species of plumularian hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Strait of Gibraltar area are described and figured, including material from the coasts of southern Spain (between El Portil near the Spanish-Portuguese border and Adra, Mediterranean coast of Granada, c. 3\xc2\xb0W) and from Ceuta in northern Africa. The geographical distribution of all species is briefly discussed and where relevant additional notes are added.

Description: Twenty-three species, subspecies or varieties of hydroids of the families Thyroscyphidae and Sertulariidae (Leptolida, Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) are described and figured, originating from north-eastern Atlantic localities visited during the CANCAP and Mauritania-II Expeditions of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum) in the years 1976-1988 and covering waters around Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde Islands and the Atlantic off Morocco and Mauritania. Besides notes on the variability of the various species in the large material available, vertical and horizontal distributions are discussed. Observations on the considerable material of Sertularella ellisii (Deshayes & Milne-Edwards, 1836) indicate that this species cannot be separated from Sertularella fusiformis (Hincks, 1861); both species are consequently merged under the oldest available name: Sertularella ellisii (Milne Edwards & Haime, 1836). Also included are the European records of Sertularella gaudichaudi Auct., not to be confused with Sertularella gaudichaudi (Lamouroux, 1824) from the Falkland Islands. Sertularella unituba Calder, 1991, is recorded from many localities in the Cape Verde Islands region; these records represent the first from the eastern Atlantic.

Description: Forty-six species of the superfamily Plumularioidea (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) and some material identified to the generic level, collected by the CANCAP and Mauritania-II expeditions of the Rijkmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum) in the period 1976-1988, are described, as well as two other species that were used in the present study. In addition to the descriptions, synonymy, variability and geographical distribution are discussed; autoecological data and measurements are also presented. The new species described here are: Aglaophenia svobodai spec. nov., Streptocaulus caboverdensis spec. nov., S. chonae spec. nov., Antennella confusa spec. nov. and Nemertesia anonyma spec. nov. All species are figured. The general classification used follows Bouillon (1985, 1995); nomenclature on the species level is as used by Svoboda & Cornelius (1991), Ramil & Vervoort (1992a, 1992b), Calder (1997) and Schuchert (1997). The material originates from the seas and coasts around the Azores, Madeira, Selvagens, Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands, as well as the Atlantic off Morocco and Mauritania, at depths varying between 0 and 4000 m. All species discussed have a wider, usually Atlantic distribution, with the exception of Streptocaulus pulcherrimus Allman, 1883, endemic in the Cape Verde area and Nemertesia belini Bedot, 1916, known only from the Azores and Cape Verde Islands.

Description: Twenty-one (sub)species of Leptolida (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) of the familes Haleciidae and Campanulariidae are described and figured, originating from collections made during the CANCAP and Mauritania- II expeditions of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum) to the north-eastern Atlantic in the years 1976-1988, visiting waters around the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde Islands and off Morocco and Mauritania. This material largely concerns well known species, the majority of which needs no detailed description. Exceptions are i.a. Halecium liouvillei Billard, 1934, Halecium sibogae marocanum Billard, 1934, Clytia arborescens Pictet, 1893, and Laomedea pseudodichotoma Vervoort, 1959. These species are described in more detail as their distributional area is extended. Of all species extensive literature references are given and the geographical distribution is discussed in detail.

Description: A total of 102 species and varieties of hydroids and three unidentifiable species are described or mentioned in the present report, which deals principally with hydroids collected in the IberoMoroccan Bay (and adjacent Atlantic), the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Alboran Sea; for revisionary purposes some additional, mainly Atlantic, material had to be included. The material described has been assigned to four families of athecate and 14 families of thecate hydroids. Nearly all species have been illustrated and a permanent slide collection has been made. Where necessary the material described has been compared with type material; ten new (sub)species are described, of which eight from the BALGIM material. Holotypes, and where necessary and/or possible paratypes have been indicated for Stegopoma giganteum spec. nov., Acryptolaria conferta minor subspec. nov., Zygophylax elongata spec. nov., Zygophylax leloupi spec. nov., Cladocarpus boucheti spec. nov., C. corneliusi spec. nov., C. paraventricosus spec. nov., and Plumularia falcicula spec. nov. and their deposition recorded. Generally holotypes have been deposited in the Mus\xc3\xa9um National d\'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Paratypes and slides are in the collections of the National Museum of Natural History (Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, former Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie), Leiden, The Netherlands. Some additional paratypes are now in The Natural History Museum [former British Museum (Natural History)], London. A representative slide collection is in the Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Medio Ambiente, Orense.\nA survey of the geographical distribution over the BALGIM stations shows that, generally speaking, practically all littoral and benthic species occur in the Alboran Sea as well as in the IberoMoroccan Bay, the few exceptions being bathyal-abyssal species for which the sill in the Strait of Gibraltar apparently forms a major obstacle in penetrating the Mediterranean. Furthermore a distinct influence of the outflowing Mediterranean Water on the bathyal hydroid fauna in the north-eastern part of the Ibero-Moroccan Bay could not be demonstrated. Synthecium evansii (Ellis & Solander, 1786), so far considered a characteristic Mediterranean hydroid, has been observed to occur on the Atlantic side of the Straits; the species moreover has recently been recorded from the Canary Islands region.\nThese observation contrast with the results obtained by Grasshoff (1989) during his study of other groups of benthic Cnidaria (Gorgonaria, Pennatularia and Antipatharia).
