Notes: The article focusses on energy transfer experiments and on photoconductivity measurements in polymeric materials. The results are interpreted in terms of scaling theories; fractals are used to describe the spatial and continuous-time random walks (CTRW) the temporal disorder. We display some successful applications of scaling ideas and also draw attention to the limitations of the models.

Notes: In this work we display recent findings on the conformations and dynamics of polyampholytes (PAs; polymers with positively and negatively charged monomers) in external electrical fields. We consider the case in which the interactions between the charges are less important (weak coupling limit) and also the case in which they are fundamental (strong coupling case). In the weak coupling limit we present analytical results for Gaussian and also for freely-jointed chains. Through scaling arguments we discuss the influence of the excluded volume on the PA's configurations. Furthermore we evaluate the dynamics of PAs in the framework of the Rouse and of the Zimm models. In the strong-coupling regime PAs with vanishing total charge form spherical globules. Using a droplet analogy we examine the response of PAs to external fields and show the onset of an instability reminiscent of a first-order phase transition.

Notes: Here we study the dynamics and the conformational properties of Rouse polymers in random layered flows. We obtain explicit expressions for the mean squared displacement of the center of mass of the polymer as a function of time and number of beads. The averages involve both the thermal noise and the realizations of the random flows. We find also an explicit dependence of the equilibrium value of the end-to-end vector on the number of beads and other dimensional parameters. Our results are compared to that for Rouse polymers immersed in non-random steady shear flows.

Notes: We consider numerically, in the framework of the lakes-straits model, the mobility of a DNA chain under field-inversion gel-electrophoresis (FIGE). Here we investigate the role of the gel's structure on the mobility. We consider two situations: (i) a DNA chain fragment is bounded by two straits (narrow gateways) at a fixed distance, but is otherwise free, and (ii) the fragment is, in addition, confined with in a closed volume (pore). We calculate the tension on the DNA fragment in the two cases. For Gaussian chains we evaluate the corresponding statistical weights exactly, using a cellular automation algorithm. We find that the resulting tension differs drastically in the two models considered. Nonetheless this difference influences only weakly the overall FIGE mobility.

Notes: In the present work we study the dynamics and conformational properties of polyampholytes (PAs, polymers containing positive and negative charges) in the presence of external electrical fields. In terms of the Rouse Model of polymer dynamics we obtain for PAs in the so-called weak coupling limit explicitly the mean square displacement both of the center of mass and of individual beads, and the PAs' end-to-end distance. We study both ordered and also random charge distributions along the chains; in the latter case we also consider the role of different correlation lengths.
