    Notes: Abstract Cycling of soil carbon in the first year after a clear-felling was compared with that before the felling in a Japanese red pine forest in Hiroshima Prefecture, west Japan. The daily mean temperature at the soil surface in summer was increased after the felling in comparison to that before felling, and the water content of both the A0 layer and the surface mineral soil was decreased due to the loss of the forest canopy. The rate of weight loss of the A0 layer was reduced after felling. However, accumulation of the A0 layer rapidly decreased because of the lack of litter supply to the forest floor. Low soil respiration after felling was mainly caused by the cessation of root respiration. Analysis of annual soil carbon cycling was then conducted using a compartment model. The relative decomposition rate of the A0 layer decreased whereas that of humus and dead roots in mineral soil increased to some extent after felling. The accumulation of carbon in mineral soil, however, increased slightly due to the supply of humus from roots killed by the felling.

    Notes: When a cation exchange membrane, prepared from poly(isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride) and poly(vinyl alcohol), is fixed in a diaphragm type cell with one side of the solution being adjusted to be alkaline and the other one acidic, a metal ion is always actively transported from the alkaline side to the acidic side, but adenine is actively transported in symport or antiport with metal ions. The transport mechanism of these metal ions and of adenine is discussed in detail.

    Notes: N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) was graft copolymerized on poly[(trimethylsilyl)propyne] (PTMSP) by single electron reduction of PTMSP with potassium naphthalenide (K-Naph), followed by anion polymerization of DMAA from the carbanion formed in the reduction. A hard and practically non-water-swelling PTMSP-gr-poly(DMAA) was obtained under the conditions using controlled amount of K-Naph and DMAA. The graft copolymer was characterized with regard to structure, number-averaged molecular weight, and the amount of grafting poly(DMAA) determined by the relative absorbance of the IR absorption band assigned to the C=O and SiC—H functionalities (AC=O/ASiC—H). The oxygen permeability and water contact angle (θ) of the graft copolymer were evaluated while varying the amount of grafting poly(DMAA). The graft copolymer proved to be highly oxygen permeable (165 Barrers) and hydrophilic (θ = 27°). Its transparency was also elucidated with UV-vis spectra. This graft copolymer was proposed as a promising candidate for use as a hard contact lens material. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 603-610, 1998

    Notes: The effect of heat treatment temperature on bending properties and transformation temperatures of a Ni-Ti alloy wire, 1.0 mm in diameter, was investigated so that superelasticity could be used in orthodontic appliances needing shape memory processes. The heat treatment process was at 713 K for 1.8 ks and between 673 K and 813 K for 1.8 ks. A three-point bending test and differential scanning calorimetry were performed. The transformation temperatures of the wires were lowered with increasing heat treatment temperature. The reverse transformation finishing temperature was below the body temperature with the treatment above 753 K. Residual deflection of the Ni-Ti wire after bending was small with the secondry heat treatment above 733 K. The load in the unloading process was less changeable and increased with the treatment temperature between 733-813 K. Secondary heat treatment in this range was suitable for using superelasticity in expansion arch appliances. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
