    Notes: Symmetric polydisperse (Mw = 23 × 104, Mw/Mn = 2.84) and monodisperse (Mw = 21 × 104, Mw/Mn 〈 1.05) polystyrene (PS), and asymmetric polydisperse PS/poly(2,6-dimethyl 1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) interfaces have been bonded in the vicinity of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PS. In a lap-shear joint geometry, strength develops in all cases with time to the fourth power, which indicates that it is diffusion controlled. Strength developing at short times at the polydisperse PS/PS interface, at 90°C, is higher than that at the monodisperse interface, at 92°C (at Tg - 13°C in both cases), presumably due to the contribution of the low molecular weight species. The decrease of strength at the PS/PPO interface when the bonding temperature decreases from 113 to 70°C, i.e., from Tg + 10°C to Tg - 33°C of the bulk PS, indicates a high molecular mobility at the surface as compared to that in the bulk, and can be expressed by a classical diffusion equation, which is valid above Tg (of the surface layer). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: A general method is described to take into account the multiple scattering effect in a small-angle light scattering from thin polymer films. It is seen that multiple scattering tends to make the scattering envelope more diffuse, reducing the intensity in the high intensity regions and increasing it in the low intensity regions. The method is applied here to a spherulitic system, but it is valid for any other system where the principal scattering is in the forward direction.

    Notes: Dynamic light-scattering experiments were performed on an ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer and its sodium salt. The in-phase ΔI′ and out-of-phase ΔI″ components of the light scattering were measured in a temperature range between 25 and 65°C for both samples. No transition is seen in this temperature interval for the acid, but a clear transition occurs around 40°C for the salt. This transition is associated with the softening point of the ionic domains present in the sample.

    Notes: A general equation describing the small-angle Hv light-scattering intensity for a system of N undeformed spherulites located at random within the sample and taking into account the truncation and interference effects is given. Scattering contour plots or radial scans are reported for various arrangements of the N spherulites. The results show that the interference effect may explain the speckled appearance of the experimental patterns. Moreover, the interference and truncation effects (for the special cases where truncation is considered here) do not seem to shift the position of the maximum scattering angle of the cloverleaf pattern as calculated from the single spherulite theory. Finally, the calculations show that the truncation effect increases the relative intensity of the pattern at large and low scattering angles and at azimuthal angles 0 and 90°C, as compared with the intensity at the position of maximum scattering angle.

    Notes: A general two-dimensional theory is derived to explain the light scattering from truncated spherulites. The severity of the truncation is expressed by a statistical parameter σ2/ā2 which is the ratio of the variance σ2 of the size of the spherulite to the square of its average size ā. The Hv light-scattering patterns are calculated for different values of the truncation parameter. It is observed that the truncation decreases the position of maximum scattering intensity of the pattern. It also increases the scattering intensity at small and large angles, but reduces it at intermediate angles. For a spherulitic polyethylene sample, the truncation parameter is found to equal 0.100 ± 0.030 as measured microscopically. The theory can also be used to calculate light-scattering patterns from row-nucleated spherulites. If it is assumed that the interference effect averages out to zero when a large number of spherulites is involved, a single “sliced” spherulite model can be used. Then, the scattering intensity per unit area decreases as the “slice” becomes very thin.

    Notes: Hartel's theory for multiple scattering has been generalized to the case of small-angle light scattering (SALS) by polymers having a roadlike morphology. It is shown that multiple scattering tends to make the scattering tends to make the scattering patterns more diffuse and leads to an underestimation of the size of the units (rods) measured from such patterns. The error induced by neglecting multiple scattering has been estimated at 10% for a transmittance of 75% and at 22% for a transmittance of 50%. A correction method based on Hartel's procedure is suggested.

    Notes: Polydioxolan samples crystallized between 25 and 35°C present two optical phases when viewed on the polarizing microscope. These phases, termed central and external phases, form a spherulite. It is shown in this paper that the central phase of the two-phase spherulite melts at about 63°C, and is made of modification III crystals. The external portion of the two-phase spherulites melts at a lower temperature, around 59°C, and is composed of modification II crystals. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) melting curves, photomicrographs, and x-ray results are presented to prove these assertions.

    Notes: A simple mechanical model based on the equilibrium rate theory of Burte and Halsey is presented in order to explain the stress-strain curve of polypivalolactone (PPL) fibers. A semiquantitative application of this model indicates that the PPL alpha-beta transformation implies the cooperative deformation of at least thrity chain units and that the free energy difference between the alpha and beta states is of the order of 2 kcal/mole of monomer.

    Notes: A procedure is described to include the effect of depolarization of the originally plane-polarized incident light beam as it passes through a thin polymer sample on the intensity of multiple light scattering. The multiple scattering gives rise to “polarization scrambling” in which, for example, Hv scattering measurements involve multiple scattered rays which may have undergone some Vv scattering. These phenomena reduce the angular dependence of scattering since large intensities originally occurring at small values of θ are rescattered so as to enhance intensities at other angles. Correction factors for both Hv and Vv scattering are presented.

    Notes: The scattering from an assembly of anisotropic rods having correlated orientation is calculated in terms of a correlation function expressing the probability of parallelism of orientation of their optic axes as a function of their separation. The scattering is dependent upon the product of a form factor for the scattering from an individual rod and an interference factor dependent upon this correlation function.
