Notes: The JKR technique was used to determine the source and nature of the adhesion hysteresis present in modified poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) networks. As controlled excess amounts of the tetrafunctional crosslinker were added to the networks, the adhesion hysteresis increased. It was found that by poisoning the catalyst with a thiol the hysteresis could be significantly lowered, and completely removed in some cases. We believe that the adhesion hysteresis in this system stems from a complexation between the excess crosslinker and the catalyst. We found that the work of adhesion in this case is a function of the unloading rate. The unloading rate dependence of this chemical adhesion hysteresis was attributed to the rate of bond dissociation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 2129-2139, 1998

Notes: A diffraction contrast study with the aid of an image intensifier was undertaken to obtain direct evidence for the existence of a mosaic block structure in polyethylene single crystals grown by self seeding under isothermal conditions. Dark-field microscopy indicates that the crystals do not contain a mosaic block structure. High-resolution electron diffraction confirms that the crystal is coherent (i.e., mosaic block-free) over regions of several thousands of Angstroms. It is concluded that a mosaic structure on the scale of ∼300 Å does not exist in polyethylene single crystals grown under carefully controlled conditions from dilute solutions. Possible reasons for previous results that indicate the presence of a ∼300 Å mosaic block structure are discussed.

Notes: Small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to study the structure along a single craze that had broken down to form a crack along part of its length. This study was made possible by use of radiation from the synchrotron source CHESS which is sufficiently intense to permit examination of just a single craze. The total scattering from the craze was in excellent agreement with that expected from a knowledge of its dimensions and fibril volume fraction and width. This fact adds confidence to the interpretation of the scattering pattern of the craze as part diffraction, part reflection, and demonstrates that SAXS is a technique that may be used to measure craze volume within a sample. The craze was shown to grow in width by surface drawing with a constant structure, and then the fibrils broke to form a crack. The broken fibrils contracted and their diameters increased but they appeared to stay parallel with a constant fibril-axis radial distribution function.
