    Notes: Calculations of focal properties and third-order aberration coefficients are presented for atom mirrors based on elastically deformed single-crystal surfaces. Biaxial loading of the mirrors is achieved by a combination of a uniform applied pressure and rectangular boundary conditions. The results are calculated for readily available single-crystal wafers of Si(111) with a thickness of 50 μm and a usable free standing diameter of 18 mm. Focusing of beams at non-normal incidence requires the principal radii of curvature, in planes normal to the mirror plane, to be different. The ratio of these principal radii of curvature is shown to be insensitive to the applied pressure and can be varied by a factor greater than 10 by changing the boundary conditions from square (1:1) to rectangular (1:2). © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The oxidation of copper induced by a cw Ar+ laser beam is investigated using time-resolved reflectance measurements at λ=632.8 and 514.5 nm, together with supporting studies of film properties by scanning Auger and electron microscopies. The optical measurements and film composition analyses indicate that the oxide layer is mainly Cu2O. Since this material is partially transparent to both the probe and oxidizing laser beams, interference of each beam within the film results. This gives rise to strong reflectance variations which can be used to gain information about the oxidation reaction via theoretical simulations of the process. A model which explicitly treats the intimate relationship between temperature, oxide growth, and optical absorption is proposed. Free of adjustable parameters, the theory uses only optical, thermal, and furnace oxidation data from the literature, and gives calculated curves in good agreement with experiment. The results of this study have important consequences for investigations of the kinetics of laser-induced reactions whenever they are driven by absorption of light by a system whose optical properties depend on the reaction, i.e., are optically self-regulating.

    Notes: Silicon implanted with 2 MeV Er ions at 350 °C is studied by Rutherford backscattering and channeling spectroscopy. Angular scans through the 〈100〉, 〈111〉, and 〈110〉 axial channels were measured. The angular scan profiles of erbium, in particular flux peak in the 〈110〉 scan profile suggest that the implanted Er atoms are predominantly located in the middle of the 〈110〉 channel (the hexagonal interstitial site). Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for the assumed hexagonal interstitial location of Er atoms. They well reproduce the experimental data, giving additional evidence for the location of Er atoms in the middle of the 〈110〉 channel. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A systematic investigation of the composition of Cr films deposited by cw 257 nm photolysis of Cr(CO)6 has been performed in order to identify sources of C and O contamination. In the absence of oxygen, the films have the approximate stoichiometry CrCO, independent of light intensity (40–2900 W/cm2). Five carbonyl groups are removed by a combination of surface photochemical and spontaneous processes; the sixth cannot be desorbed in the absence of heating. Deposits grown by purely gas phase photolysis have the approximate composition Cr(CO)2. Oxygen containing species present in the cell during deposition and/or exposure to air rapidly and efficiently convert these films to Cr2O3.

    Notes: A method is demonstrated by which liquid-crystalline self-organization in rigid-rod nematic conjugated polymers can be used to control the microstructure of the active semiconducting layer in solution-processed polymer thin-film transistors (TFTs). Enhanced charge carrier mobilities of 0.01–0.02 cm2/V s and good operating stability have been achieved in polyfluorene copolymer TFTs by preparing the polymer in a nematic glassy state and by aligning the polymer chains parallel to the transport direction with the help of an alignment layer. Mobility anisotropies of 5–8 for current flow parallel and perpendicular to the alignment direction have been observed that are of the same order of magnitude as optical dichroic ratios. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Fluorine was co-implanted with 2 MeV erbium into silicon substrates. The thermal treatment for implanted samples was started with a 600 °C, 3 h anneal for solid-phase epitaxial regrowth then followed by a 900 °C, 30 min anneal to optically activate the erbium atoms. Photoluminescence measurements have shown a strong enhancement of the luminescence intensity in samples co-implanted with fluorine which, it is suggested, leads to the formation of Er–F complexes and facilitates defect annealing in the silicon lattice. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry was used to characterize the crystalline quality and erbium redistribution after the regrowth. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Gametocytes differentiated from ring-stage parasites in microcultures of human blood infected with Plasmodium falciparum. Immature gametocytes could be distinguished morphologically from late asexual trophozoites after ∼ 40 h of culture. Differentiation into crescentic forms took several days and the incorporation of [3H]-isoleucine by developing gametocytes was demonstrated. About 1% of red cells contained gametocytes at the maximum densities attained. Differentiation of gametocytes occurred either directly from rings placed in culture or from the progeny of subsequent cycles of schizogony and invasion in vitro. The latter occurrence was confirmed by the development of gametocytes in marker fetal red cells added to cultures, although fetal red cells provide a less favorable environment than those with HbA for growth of the parasites.
