    Colloid & polymer science 263 (1985), S. 116-119
    ISSN: 1435-1536
    Keywords: Electron microscopy ; staining ; morphology ; nylon-12 ; orientation
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology , Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision Mechanics
Notes: Abstract The morphology of drawn and annealed sheets of nylon-12 was investigated by transmission electron microscopy of stained sections, and the results compared with equivalent small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) patterns. A three-component structure was observed, consisting of crystalline (C) and amorphous (A) regions in the microfibrils and an interfibrillar component whose density was deduced to be intermediate between that of the C and A regions. The crystallite width was given satisfactorily by a Guinier analysis of the SAXS profile.

    Colloid & polymer science 266 (1988), S. 241-247
    ISSN: 1435-1536
Keywords: Biopolymer ; PHB ; copolymersstructural properties ; mechanical properties
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology , Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision Mechanics
Notes: Abstract Some structural and mechanical properties of PHB homopolymer and copolymers containing 17 and 25–30% PHV have been investigated. X-ray scattering, optical microscopy, density measurements and differential scanning calorimetry were used to interpret the results of load-elongation curves and thermomechanical softening measurements.

    Colloid & polymer science 266 (1988), S. 311-315
    ISSN: 1435-1536
    Keywords: Low-densitypolyethylene ; orientation ; slip process ; birefringence ; mechanicalanisotropy
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology , Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision Mechanics
Notes: Abstract A simple, physical model has been developed to describe orientation in thermoplastic polymers, involving the boundary slip and rotation of rod-like structural elements. Orientation parameters have been calculated, and expressions for the birefringence and elastic mechanical anisotropy deduced. Results on cold-drawn, low-density polyethylene agree well with this model.

    Colloid & polymer science 262 (1984), S. 793-797
    ISSN: 1435-1536
    Keywords: electron microscopy ; polyethylene ; morphology ; orientation ; small-angle X-ray scattering
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology , Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision Mechanics
Notes: Abstract The morphology of cold-drawn, rolled and annealed high-density polyethylene was investigated by transmission electron microscopy of stained sections. From the electron micrographs, a model of the structure was developed and the scattering pattern calculated. This was then compared with the corresponding small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) pattern, in order both to aid in the interpretation of SAXS patterns of oriented polymers, and to assess the effects of staining with chlorosulphonic acid on the morphology.

    ISSN: 0959-8103
Keywords: starch ; poly-3-hydroxybutyrate ; biodegradable polymers ; mechanical properties ; Chemistry ; Polymer and Materials Science
Source: Wiley InterScience Backfile Collection 1832-2000
Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology , Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision Mechanics , Physics
Notes: The structure and mechanical properties of melt-pressed sheets of bacterially produced poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate (PHB/HV) filled with various amounts of particulate maize starch granules have been investigated. The experimental methods included stress-strain measurements, differential thermal analysis to determine heats of fusion and melting temperatures, scanning electron microscopy, and optical microscopy to obtain information on crystallization behaviour and spherulite growth.
