Description: The results of the monitoring of mangrove cockle fishery during 2008 are reported. Hualtaco and San Lorenzo had the higher values of landings (6 667 617 and 5 959 595 cockles, respectively). The fishery effort fluctuated between 50 (Puerto Jelí) and 320 (San Lorenzo) cockles harvesters/fishing day and the catch per unit effort (CPUE) was between 100 (Muisne) and 136 (Puerto Jelí) cockles/cockles harvesters/day. The cockles (over 55% of total capture) mostly were under the minimum lenght of capture (45 mm TL) (above 55%), this was observed in cockle´s harvesters and traders in each port. In each zone was registered and intensive reproductive periods, with a higher incidence of individuals in spawning and mature stage during de year. These results reveal a decrease in landings and catch rate (CPUE) to the mangrove cockle fishery in contrast to previous years, because oh this, it is recommended the design of policy to prevent the collapse of the fishery.

Description: This document refers to the reproductive phase of the red crab Ucides occidentalis during the reproductive closure season. This study is based on sampling site which runs in two phases: the first was done between January 28 to February 1, 2009 at the estuary of the Gulf of Guayaquil, which includes: Churute, Mondragón Island, Escalante Island, and Chupadores Chico Island. The second phase took place in the Churute Reserve and the Naranjal sector from 9 to 14 Febrary 2009. During both phases of sampling we noticed burrows covered with ovate or pregnant females, the conclusion are that both, male and female, were walking or crawling in their habitat. In the second phase predominated uncovered burrows with females spawn. A series of management measures are recommended such as to continue with the 30 days of annual reproductive season (january 15 to February 15), wich was established in the Ministerial Agreement No. 016.
