Description:
Description:
Abstract: Investigations of sediment samples from excavation pits near Erbes-Büdesheim
(Rheinland-Pfalz) showed that the sediments mainly consist of local detritus and bioclasts. They
contain only a few authigene mineral formations (framboidal pyrite and glauconite). The investigated
beds can be correlated biostratigraphically with the papillatum-shellbeds of the Schildberg-
Subformation (Oligocene of the Mainz-Basin). Two paleocommunities have been identified:
the Crassostrea cyatula - Granulolabium plicatum papillatum - paleocommunity (CGPC)
and the Granulolabium plicatum papillatum - Potamides lamarcki - paleocommunity (GPPC). It
is assumed that the paleoenvironment was a transition zone between a temperate pseudomicrotidal
marsh and the mudflats in front of it. The marsh was created at the base of the silted up
270 m high abrasion platform BrPl 4 during the lowstand after a brief regression. The necessary
tides for the formation of the marsh are attributed to daily sea breezes and seiches.
