    Description: The five largest magnetic storms that occurred between 1971 to 1986 are studied to determine their solar and interplanetary causes. All of the events are found to be associated with high speed solar wind streams led by collisionless shocks. The high speed streams are clearly related to identifiable solar flares. It is found that: (1) it is the extreme values of the southward interplanetary magnetic fields rather than solar wind speeds that are the primary causes of great magnetic storms, (2) shocked and draped sheath fields preceding the driver gas (magnetic cloud) are at least as effective in causing the onset of great magnetic storms (3 of 5 events) as the strong fields within the driver gas itself, and (3) precursor southward fields ahead of the high speed streams allow the shock compression mechanism (item 2) to be particularly geoeffective.

    Description: The heliocentrifugal motion of coronal loop transients is likely driven largely by the buoyant force exerted by the ambient medium. In the outer corona where the solar wind is well formed, the buoyant force results mainly from the rapid outward decrease in the ambient pressure of the solar wind. The contribution from magnetic buoyancy is not so significant as in the vicinity of the solar surface. Therefore, the pertinent features of the loop transients in the outer corona are basically gasdynamical. As a conspicuous part of coronal expansion, the motion of the compressible masses in the transient loops is largely controlled by thermal forces. The translational motion of heliocentrifugal expansion is driven by the hydrodynamic buoyant force, and the lateral motion of peripheral expansion is driven by the pressure difference between the dense plasma of the ejecta and the tenuous plasma of the ambient medium.

    Description: Data from the thumper shots of the Apollo 14 and Apollo 16 active seismic experiments, testing whether the velocity variation in the shallow lunar crust (depths less than or equal to 10 m) can be represented by a self-compacting-power-layer or by a constant-velocity-layer model, are analyzed. Although filtering and stacking improved the S/N ratios, it was found that measuring the arrival times or amplitudes of arrivals beyond 32 m was not possible. The data quality precluded a definitive distinction between the power-law velocity variation and the layered-velocity model. Furthermore, it was found that the shallow lunar regolith is made up of fine particles, which supports the idea of a 1/6 power-velocity model. Analysis of the amplitudes of first arrivals revealed large errors in the data due to variations in the geophone sensitivities and shot strengths; a least-squares method, that uses data redundancy was employed to eliminate them.

    Description: An organic solvent extract of billion year old Nonesuch Shale was examined for porphyrins by means of fluorometry and high resolution mass spectrometry. It appears to contain at least three or more classes of porphyrins, one similar to tetraphenyl porphin and the others more complex. Many are apparently chelated with copper, nickel, zinc, iron and vanadyl and are highly aromatic. We have also examined the extracts of Apollo 11, 12 and 14 surface fines for porphyrins by spectrophotofluorometry, but we found none.

    Description: Apollo 11, 12, and 14 lunar surface fines were examined for the presence of porphyrins by a sensitive fluorescent technique. The returned lunar samples studied were of bulk fines collected from the Sea of Tranquillity by Apollo 11, from the Ocean of Storms by Apollo 12, and from the nonmare Fra Mauro formation by Apollo 14. It was found that no porphyrins are present in lunar surface fines which have been extensively irradiated and sorted.

    Description: The venoarteriolar response causes vasoconstriction to skin and muscle via local mechanisms secondary to venous congestion. The purpose of this project was to investigate whether this response occurs through alpha-adrenergic mechanisms. In supine individuals, forearm skin blood flow was monitored via laser-Doppler flowmetry over sites following local administration of terazosin (alpha(1)-antagonist), yohimbine (alpha(2)-antagonist), phentolamine (non-selective alpha-antagonist) and bretylium tosylate (inhibits neurotransmission of adrenergic nerves) via intradermal microdialysis or intradermal injection. In addition, skin blood flow was monitored over an area of forearm skin that was locally anaesthetized via application of EMLA (2.5 % lidocaine (lignocaine) and 2.5 % prilocaine) cream. Skin blood flow was also monitored over adjacent sites that received the vehicle for the specified drug. Each trial was performed on a minimum of seven subjects and on separate days. The venoarteriolar response was engaged by lowering the subject's arm from heart level such that the sites of skin blood flow measurement were 34 +/- 1 cm below the heart. The arm remained in this position for 2 min. Selective and non-selective alpha-adrenoceptor antagonism and presynaptic inhibition of adrenergic neurotransmission did not abolish the venoarteriolar response. However, local anaesthesia blocked the venoarteriolar response without altering alpha-adrenergic mediated vasoconstriction. These data suggest that the venoarteriolar response does not occur through adrenergic mechanisms as previously reported. Rather, the venoarteriolar response may due to myogenic mechanisms associated with changes in vascular pressure or is mediated by a non-adrenergic, but neurally mediated, local mechanism.
