    Notes: Abstract Bed sediment samples collected from the Hoogly, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery estuaries on the east coast of India were analyzed for rare earth elements (REEs), mainly lanthanides (La–Lu), Y, a number of metals (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, Ag, Cd and Pb), using Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry. Continental weathering plays an important role in the distribution of REEs and metals. However, metals showed wide variation in concentration among estuaries, mainly due to varying salinity, which controls complex estuarine processes, and partly to anthropogenic inputs. Factor analysis of elemental data identified two major groups of elements: (i) LREEs, HREEs, Cd, Pb and Ag, revealing an association with detritals brought in by the rivers; and (ii) V, Cr , Co, Ni and Zn, indicating complex estuarine processes and human input. LREEs are more enriched than HREEs (LREE/HREE ratio varied between 12 and 40) reflecting silicate weathering of crustal materials, and a resultant increase in LREEs in detritals. We conclude that the estuarine system constitutes 70% of LREEs and 30% of HREE flux to the Bay of Bengal.

    Description: The origin of the deposition of superior-type Precambrian banded iron formations (BIFs) is investigated in experiments where the effect of UV radiation on dissolved manganese was studied to determine if the commonly accepted photochemical model for BIF formation is consistent with the distribution of Mn in BIFs. Solutions containing 0.56 M NaCl and about 180 microM MnCl2, with or without 3 to 200 microM FeCl2 were irradiated with filtered and unfiltered UV light for up to 8 hrs; the solutions were deaerated and buffered to a pH of 7, and the experiments were conducted under oxygen-free atmosphere. Data on the rate of manganese photooxidation confirmed that a photochemical model for the origin of oxide facies BIFs is consistent with field observations.

    Description: H2O2 is probably the dominant oxidant in rainwater at O2 levels lower than 0.01-0.001 present atmospheric levels (PAL), and the magnitude of its dissolved flux is sensitive to the concentration of the trace gases NO, CO, and CH4 in the atmosphere, as well as to the partial pressure of atmospheric CO2. The earlier interpretation of the paleosol data in terms of the ratio of p-O2/p-CO2 in the atmosphere must be modified by taking into account the effects of photochemically produced oxidants and reactants at p-O2 of les than 0.01 PAL.
