    Notes: Abstract An electrostatic analyser (ESA) onboard the Equator-S spacecraft operating in coordination with a potential control device (PCD) has obtained the first accurate electron energy spectrum with energies &7 eV-100 eV in the vicinity of the magnetopause. On 8 January, 1998, a solar wind pressure increase pushed the magnetopause inward, leaving the Equator-S spacecraft in the magnetosheath. On the return into the magnetosphere approximately 80 min later, the magnetopause was observed by the ESA and the solid state telescopes (the SSTs detected electrons and ions with energies &20–300 keV). The high time resolution (3 s) data from ESA and SST show the boundary region contains of multiple plasma sources that appear to evolve in space and time. We show that electrons with energies &7 eV–100 eV permeate the outer regions of the magnetosphere, from the magnetopause to &6Re. Pitch-angle distributions of &20–300 keV electrons show the electrons travel in both directions along the magnetic field with a peak at 90° indicating a trapped configuration. The IMF during this interval was dominated by Bx and By components with a small Bz.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetic field measurements, taken by the magnetometer experiment (MAM) on board the German Equator-S spacecraft, have been used to identify and categorise 131 crossings of the dawn-side magnetopause at low latitude, providing unusual, long duration coverage of the adjacent magnetospheric regions and near magnetosheath. The crossings occurred on 31 orbits, providing unbiased coverage over the full range of local magnetic shear from 06:00 to 10:40 LT. Apogee extent places the spacecraft in conditions associated with intermediate, rather than low, solar wind dynamic pressure, as it processes into the flank region. The apogee of the spacecraft remains close to the magnetopause for mean solar wind pressure. The occurrence of the magnetopause encounters are summarised and are found to compare well with predicted boundary location, where solar wind conditions are known. Most scale with solar wind pressure. Magnetopause shape is also documented and we find that the magnetopause orientation is consistently sunward of a model boundary and is not accounted for by IMF or local magnetic shear conditions. A number of well-established crossings, particularly those at high magnetic shear, or exhibiting unusually high-pressure states, were observed and have been analysed for their boundary characteristics and some details of their boundary and near magnetosheath properties are discussed. Of particular note are the occurrence of mirror-like signatures in the adjacent magnetosheath during a significant fraction of the encounters and a high number of multiple crossings over a long time period. The latter is facilitated by the spacecraft orbit which is designed to remain in the near magnetosheath for average solar wind pressure. For most encounters, a well-ordered, tangential (draped) magnetosheath field is observed and there is little evidence of large deviations in local boundary orientations. Two passes corresponding to close conjunctions of the Geotail spacecraft are analysed to confirm boundary orientation and motion. These further show evidence of an anti-sunward moving depression on the magnetopause (which is much smaller at Equator-S). The Tsyganenko model field is used routinely to assist in categorising the crossings and some comparison of models is carried out. We note that typically the T87 model fits the data better than the T89 model during conditions of low to intermediate Kp index near the magnetopause and also near the dawn-side tail current sheet in the dawnside region.

    Description: The AMPTE IRM solar wind data are analyzed to determine the relationship between upstream pressure fluctuations and magnetospheric perturbations. It is argued that the upstream pressure variations are not inherent in the solar wind but rather are associated with the bow shock. This conclusion follows from the fact that the upstream field strength and density associated with perturbations are highly correlated with each other, while they tend to be anticorrelated in the undisturbed solar wind, and that the upstream perturbations occur within the foreshock or at its boundary. The results imply a mode of interaction between the solar wind upstream and the magnetosphere whereby density changes produced in the foreshock subsequently convect through the bow shock and impinge on the magnetosphere. Upstream pressure perturbations should create significant effects on the magnetopause and at the foot of nearby field lines that lead to the polar cusp ionosphere.

    Description: The concept of the Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW) grew out of the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) program. According to this concept, data are to be pooled from a wide variety of spacecraft and ground-based sources for limited time intervals. These data are to provide the basis for the performance of very detailed correlative analyses, usually with fairly limited physical problems in mind. However, in the case of the CDAW 6 truly global goals are involved. The primary goal is to trace the flow of energy from the solar wind through the magnetosphere to its ultimate dissipation by substorm processes. The present investigation has the specific goal to examine the evidence for the storage of solar wind energy in the magnetotail prior to substorm expansion phase onsets. Of particular interest is the determination, in individual substorm cases, of the time delays between the loading of energy into the magnetospheric system and the subsequent unloading of this energy.

    Description: The contributions to the substorm expansive phase of direct energy input from the solar wind and from energy stored in the magnetotail which is released in an unpredictable manner are considered. Two physical processes for the dispensation of the energy input from the solar wind are identified: (1) a driven process in which energy supplied from the solar wind is directly dissipated in the ionosphere; and (2) a loading-unloading process in which energy from the solar wind is first stored in the magnetotail and then is suddenly released to be deposited in the ionosphere. The pattern of substorm development in response to changes in the interplanetary medium has been elucidated for a canonical isolated substorm.

    Description: Ionospheric and field-aligned sheet current density distributions are presently inferred by means of MAGSAT vector magnetometer data, together with an accurate magnetic field model. By comparing Hall current densities inferred from the MAGSAT data and those inferred from simultaneously recorded ground based data acquired by the Scandinavian magnetometer array, it is determined that the former have previously been underestimated due to high damping of magnetic variations with high spatial wave numbers between the ionosphere and the MAGSAT orbit. Among important results of this study is noted the fact that the Birkeland and electrojet current systems are colocated. The analyses have shown a tendency for triangular rather than constant electrojet current distributions as a function of latitude, consistent with the statistical, uniform regions 1 and 2 Birkeland current patterns.

    Description: The relationship of Birkeland currents and ionospheric currents has been determined from MAGSAT magnetic field observations. A two-dimensional ionospheric current analysis using a Fourier technique has been used to study several MAGSAT orbits on March 21, 1980. The use of the MAGSAT data allows an extensive ionospheric current system to be matched directly to the inferred Birkeland current system without the aid of a conductivity model (this is not the case with Birkeland currents deduced from surface magnetic field measurements). The results include electrojet current distributions that are generally triangular with peak intensity at the center and, in some cases, more complicated distributions associated with equally complicated Birkeland currents. The Birkeland currents generally occupy the same latitudes as do the electrojets, and the Region 1-Region 2 boundary is located near the center of the electrojet.

    Description: High speed flows in the Earth's Inner Central Plasma Sheet (ICPS) occur during enhanced flow intervals that have been termed Bursty Bulk Flow (BBF) events. The importance of different flow magnitude samples for Earthward transport in the ICPS are statistically evaluated and several representative BBF's and their relevance to Earthward transport are discussed. The selection of BBF's is automated in a database and they are shown to be responsible for most of the Earthward transport that occurs within the ICPS. The BBF related transport is compared to the transport measured within the entire plasma sheet during the 1985 AMPTE/IRM crossings of the magnetotail. The results show that BBF's last only a small fraction of the time in the plasma sheet but can account for several tens of percent of the Earthward particle and energy transfer and possibly all of the Earthward magnetic flux transfer in the plasma sheet.

    Description: Simultaneous observations of energetic particle measurements from the geosynchronous satellite 1982-019 and magnetic field, electron plasma, and energetic proton and electron measurements obtained with ISEE 3 in the deep tail are presented. The data are supplemented by ground magnetograms. A substorm occurred on March 22, 1983, close to 0300 UT as identified in the ground magnetograms and by a particle injection at geosynchronous orbit. About 10 min later, ISEE 3 observed (at a distance of approximately 130 RE in the deep tail) magnetic field, plasma, and energetic particle signatures consistent with the passage of a plasmoid. After the passage of the plasmoid the satellite enters shortly into a lobelike environment, in which an energetic proton beam is observed. High-resolution magnetic field data are indicative of small-scale structures in the postplasmoid plasma sheet. From the plasma sheet flow speed during the plasmoid's passage it is concluded that the 0300 UT substorm is responsible for its origin. This allows an approximate timing of the plasmoid release at a near-earth neutral line and of the plasma sheet recovery after substorm onset, and it indicates a close relationship between processes in the near-earth plasma sheet and the deep tail during substorms.

    Description: Particle data have been acquired by the 1981-025 and 1982-019 spacecraft at geosynchronous orbit, as well as ISEE-1 in the near earth geomagnetic tail, and ISEE-3 in the distant geomagnetic tail. These observations are supplemented by ground-based magnetograms from near local midnight stations. Attention is given to a substorm recovery phase, and to observations of ion beams at the plasma sheet boundary in the near earth and distant tail, respectively, which are found to flow in opposite directions.
