    Notes: The possibility of producing high-modulus nylon 6 fibers by incorporation of lithium chloride (LiCl) in the polymer prior to spinning and drawing has been examined. Samples containing 2% and 4% LiCl (w/w) together with an unsalted control were studied. Particular attention was given to optimizing the spinning process by varying the melt temperature and the draw-down. The spun fibers were subsequently drawn in a tensile testing machine at 135°C, preliminary studies having established that this was desirable for the production of high-modulus material. The influence of annealing after drawing was also examined. Drawn fiber moduli in the range 8-9 GPa were obtained, compared with ca. 5-6 GPa for unsalted material. Limited structural studies (birefringence and wide-angle x-ray diffraction) suggest that the enhancement of modulus is due to an increase in the stiffening effect of extended molecules in the noncrystalline regions. Dynamic mechanical measurements show that there is reduced chain mobility in the disordered regions of the polymer, suggesting strong polymer-ion interactions. The salt can be readily removed by washing the fibers in boiling water, with significant reduction in moduli. This militates against commercial application of the salted fibers.

    Notes: Highly oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) rods have been produced by drawing isotropic polymer through a conical die. A range of oriented products was obtained, depending on the drawing temperature and the deformation ratio achieved. At low draw temperatures the draw ratio and final modulus are comparatively low, but a high Form I crystal content is obtained. At high draw temperatures the Form I content varies greatly with draw ratio, reaching high values at large draw ratios, where the highest-modulus samples were obtained.

    Description: Two statistical models are compared in the classification of crops recorded on color aerial photographs. A theory of error ellipses is applied to the pattern recognition problem. An elliptical boundary condition classification model (EBC), useful for recognition of candidate patterns, evolves out of error ellipse theory. The EBC model is compared with the minimum distance to the mean (MDM) classification model in terms of pattern recognition ability. The pattern recognition results of both models are interpreted graphically using scatter diagrams to represent measurement space. Measurement space, for this report, is determined by optical density measurements collected from Kodak Ektachrome Infrared Aero Film 8443 (EIR). The EBC model is shown to be a significant improvement over the MDM model.

    Description: Reflectance from vegetation increases with increasing vegetation density in the 0.75- to 1.35 micron wavelength interval. Therefore, ERTS-1 bands 6 (0.7 to 0.8 micron) and 7 (0.8 to 1.1 micron) contain information that should relate to the probable yield of crops and the animal carrying capacity of rangeland. The results of an experiment designed specifically to test the relations among leaf area index (LAI), plant population, plant cover and plant height, and the ERTS-1 MSS responses for 3 corn, 10 sorghum, and 10 cotton fields are given. Plant population was as useful as LAI for characterizing the sorghum and corn fields, and plant height was as good as LAI for characterizing cotton fields. These findings generally support the utility of ERTS-1 data for explaining variability in green biomass, harvestable forage and other indicators of productivity.

    Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Iron deficient and normal grain sorghum plants were sufficiently different spectrally in ERTS-1 band 5 CCT data to detect chlorotic sorghum areas 2.8 acres (1.1 hectares) or larger in size in computer printouts of the MSS data. The ratio of band 5 to band 7 or band 7 minus band 5 relates to vegetation ground cover conditions and helps to select training samples representative of differing vegetation maturity or vigor classes and to estimate ground cover or green vegetation density in the absence of ground information. The four plant parameters; leaf area index, plant population, plant cover, and plant height explained 87 to 93% of the variability in band 6 digital counts and from 59 to 90% of the variation in bands 4 and 5. A ground area 2244 acres in size was classified on a pixel by pixel basis using simultaneously acquired aircraft support and ERTS-1 data. Overall recognition for vegetables, immature crops and mixed shrubs, and bare soil categories was 64.5% for aircraft and 59.6% for spacecraft data, respectively. Overall recognition results on a per field basis were 61.8% for aircraft and 62.8% for ERTS-1 data.

    Description: Multispectral scanner reflectance data were sampled for bare soil, cotton, sorghum, corn, and citrus at four dates during a growing season (April, May, June, and July 1969) to develop a time-dependent signature for crop and soil discrimination. Discrimination tests were conducted for single-date and multidate formats using training and test data sets. For classifications containing several crops, the multidate or temporal approach improved discrimination compared with the single-date approach. The multidate approach also preserved recognition accuracy better in going from training fields to test fields than the single-date analysis. The spectral distinctiveness of bare soil versus vegetation resulted in essentially equal discrimination using single-date versus multidate data for those two categories.
