Description: Registration technique that matches binary boundary maps extracted from raw data, rather than matching actual data, is considerably faster than other techniques. Boundary maps, which are digital representations of regions where image amplitudes change significantly, typically represent data compression of 60 to 70 percent. Maps allow average products to be computed with addition rather than multiplication, further reducing computation time.

Description: The object of this report is to acquaint potential users with two computer programs, developed at NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center. They were used in producing a land use survey and maps of central north Alabama from Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) digital data. The report describes in detail the thought processes and analysis procedures used from the initiation of the land use study to its completion, as well as a photogrammetric study that was used in conjunction with the computer analysis to produce similar land use maps. The results of the land use demonstration indicate that, with respect to computer time and cost, such a study may be economically and realistically feasible on a statewide basis.

Description: Iterative technique applies over wider range of initial guesses. New theorem describes convergence zone of Newton's iterative method for finding zeros of real function. Involves two points, Xp and Xp*, called primary conjugate points. If exact solution lies between these points (Xp is less than Xz is less than Xp*) and no other conjugate points in interval, then according to theorem, subsequent iterations will converge upon exact solution if initial guess lies in interval.
