    Description: The production of high-resolution topographic maps derived from interferometric synthetic aperture radar observations of the Earth is reported. Topographic maps are typically determined from stereo-pair optical photographs. Vertical relief causes the same terrain to appear in a slightly different projection for differing look angles, and this shift in appearance is interpreted in terms of the height of the terrain. The radar interferometric approach is related to the stereo technique in that the terrain is viewed at two different angles; however, in this case, the angular separation of the antennas is extremely small, on the order of a milliradian or less, as compared to tens of degrees for the optical case. Thus, the geometrical distortion and subsequent rectification correction algorithms are much less severe in the reduction of interferometric data.

    Description: Interferometric SAR observations are a basis for the generation of high resolution topographic maps of a region through the interpretation of interference fringes. The combination of height, along-track, and slant range measurements is sufficient for rectification of the radar imagery for cartographic applications, in addition to furnishing an accurate determination of the scene topography. Topographic maps have been derived on the basis of data recorded by both aircraft and Seasat-A satellite radars. A comparison of the maps obtained with U.S. Geological Survey Contour maps indicates a high degree of correlation between two sets of altitude data.

    Description: Approximately three months of radio tracking data from the Viking landers have been analyzed to determine the lander locations, the orientation of the spin axis of Mars, and a first estimate from Viking data of the planet's spin rate. Preliminary results have also been obtained for atmospheric parameters and radii at occultation points and for properties of the surface in the vicinity of lander 1.

    Description: The International Astronomical Union has endorsed a nomenclature for the albedo features on Mercury. Designations are based upon the mythological names related to the god Hermes; they are expressed in Latin form. The dark-hued albedo features are associated with the generic term Solitudo. The light-hued areas are designated by a single name without generic term. The 32 names adopted are allocated on the Mercury map.

    Description: By using two SAR antennas spaced a known distance, B, and oriented at substantially the same look angle to illuminate the same target area, pixel data from the two antennas may be compared in phase to determine a difference delta phi from which a slant angle theta is determined for each pixel point from an equation Delta phi = (2 pi B/lambda)sin(theta - alpha), where lambda is the radar wavelength and alpha is the roll angle of the aircraft. The height, h, of each pixel point from the aircraft is determined from the equation h = R cos theta, and from the known altitude, a, of the aircraft above sea level, the altitude (elevation), a', of each point is determined from the difference a - h. This elevation data may be displayed with the SAR image by, for example, quantizing the elevation at increments of 100 feet starting at sea level, and color coding pixels of the same quantized elevation. The distance, d, of each pixel from the ground track of the aircraft used for the display may be determined more accurately from the equation d = R sin theta.

    Description: During the 1977 inferior conjunction of Venus, radar observations were made using three receiving stations as a multiple interferometer. Maps of surface reflectivity and altimetry were prepared from these observations. The new altimetry maps show considerable improvement in relation to many of the earlier maps made using the two-station interferometer. In particular, there are consistent and explainable correlations between the altimetry and reflectivity maps that did not always exist in the past. The highest-resolution maps (about 8 km) show three isolated mountains having altitudes of approximately 2 km above their environs, a pair of ridges separated by approximately 100 km and extending 800 km, and a few anomalous reflectivity features for which little or no altitude change is observed. Other maps at slightly lower resolution show a bright irregular ringed crater, a few large low-reflectivity regions, a shallow crater 150 km in diameter, a gently sloping mountain, and a short ridge running north-south. Many of the later features have been seen in earlier radar maps and should be useful in refining the spin axis and further characterizing the regolith of certain areas of Venus.

    Description: Radar observations of Ganymede at X band show that the surface is unusually bright and has unusual polarization properties. A model of the surface based on large numbers of random ice facets (hence vacuum-ice interfaces) is able to account for these characteristics.
