Description:
Two benthic dinoflagellates species of genus Sinophysis (Dinophyta) were identified and described as first records to dinoflagellate flora in Vietnam. They are Sinophysis canaliculata Quod, Ten-Hage, Turquet, Mascarell et Couté 1999 and S. microcephala Nie et Wang 1944. The specimens of these species were collected from seaweeds and seagrasses along the coasts, Spratly archipelago, Vietnam. These species from the tropical regions differ from the all known species of Sinophysis genus in the highly areolate pattern on the theca. Whereas all Sinophysis species from the temperate regions (S. ebriolum, S. grandis, S. minima, S. stenosoma and S. verruculosa) have smooth thecal surface with no ornamentation except S. verrucolusa. Cells of Sinophysis canaliculata differ from S. microcephala mainly in the present of the thecal cut with U - shape on the left hypotheca and the shape of the cell.
