    Description: This abstract describes an instrument and experiment to be proposed for a future Mars surface mission to conduct basic research on environmental characterization. The Regolith Evolved Gas Analyzer (REGA) experiment is designed to provide information on Mars surface material properties in preparation for human missions of exploration. The goals of the investigation are: 1) Define and determine surface mineralogy of soil and dust and their effects on humans and machines; and 2) Conduct in-situ investigations aimed at identifying possible evidence of past or present life on Mars.

    Description: For the purpose of the following discussion, we assume that of the six crew members sent to Mars, at least three will be scientists. We further assume that geological and biological investigations will proceed together (although investigative techniques may vary), both for vestiges of ancient life, and for evidence of living organisms. Finally, unexpected discoveries may cause sudden changes in exploration strategies, and mission planning should be flexible enough to accommodate such shifts.

    Description: The instrument consists of five subsystems: (1) a programmable furnace which can be loaded with samples of regolith, (2) a mass spectrometer which detects and measures atmospheric gases or gases evolved during heating, (3) a tank of pressurized gas which can be introduced to the regolith material while detecting and measuring volatile reaction products, (4) a mechanism for dumping the regolith sample and repeating the experiment on a fresh sample, and (5) a data system which controls and monitors the furnace, gas system, and mass spectrometer.
