Notes: The condensation of α-carbanions formed from pentacoordinate bicycloazastannoxides with aldehydes was investigated. Nine novel organotin(IV) complexes with β-hydroxy-a-amino acids were synthesized. Their structures were determined by IR, 1H NMR, 119Sn NMR spectroscopy, MS, and elemental analyses. The reaction mechanism is discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A novel acetone-butanol production process was developed which integrates a repeated fed-batch fermentation with continuous product removal and cell recycle. The inhibitory product concentrations of the fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum were reduced by the simultaneous extraction process using polyvinylpyridine (PVP) as an adsorbent. Because of the reduced inhibition effect, a higher specific cell growth rate and thus a higher product formation rate was achieved. The cell recycle using membrane separation increased the total cell mass density and, therefore, enhanced the reactor productivity. The repeated fed-batchoperation overcame the drawbacks typically associated with a batch operation such as down times, long lag period, and the limitation on the maximum initial substrate concentration allowed due to the substrate inhibition. Unlike a continuous operation, the repeated fed-batch operation could beoperated for a long time at a relatively higher substrate concentration without sacrificing the substrate loss in the effluent. As a result, the integrated process reached 47.2 g/L in the equivalent solvent concentration (including acetone, butanol, and ethanol) and 1.69 g/L · h in the fermentor productivity, on average, over a 239.5-h period. Compared with a controlled traditional batch acetone-butanol fermentation, the equivalent solvent concentration and the tormentor productivity were increased by 140% and 320%, respectively. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons Inc.

Notes: DNA branched junctions are analogues of Holliday junction recombination intermediates. Partially mobile junctions contain a limited amount of homology flanking the branch point. A partially mobile DNA branched junction has been incorporated into a synthetic double-stranded circular DNA molecule. The junction is flanked by four homologous nucleotide pairs, so that there are five possible locations for the branch point. Two opposite arms of the branched junction are joined to form the circular molecule, which contains 262 nucleotides to the base of the junction. This molecule represents a system whereby torque applied to the circular molecule can have an impact on the junction, by relocating its branch point. Ligation of the molecule produces two topoisomers; about 87% of the product is a relaxed molecule, and the rest is a molecule with one positive supercoil. The position of the branch point is assayed by cleaving the molecule with endonuclease VII. We find that the major site of the branch point in the relaxed topoisomer is at the maximally extruded position in the relaxed molecule. Upon the addition of ethidium, the major site of the branch point migrates to the minimally extruded position. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biopoly 45: 69-83, 1998
