Notes: A low molecular weight copolymer of vinylbenzyl chloride and butadiene was quaternized with N-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylamide. The resin was coated from water solution to give a photorelief plate which could be developed with water. A photocured protective coating on steel showed good toughness.

Notes: The enantiomers of the aromatase inhibitors 3-(4-aminophenyl)-pyrrolidine-2,5-dione (WSP-3, II), its N-pentyl derivative (III), and the antifungal econazole (IV), all possessing a benzylic proton at the chiral centre, are rapidly racemised in vitro in phosphate buffer (0.01 M) at pH 7.4 and 23°C with t½ values of 7, 6, and 5 h respectively. In vivo studies in rats show that (+)-econazole is racemised after intraperitoneal injection with t½ = 1.24h. The enantiomers of the antifungal 1-[(benzofuran-2-yl)-4-chlorophenylmethyl] imidazole (V) were stable at pH 7.4, attributable to steric hindrance to carbanion formation in the racemisation step. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The (+)-, (-)-, and (±)-forms of 1- and 1,3-substituted 3-(4-aminophenyl)pyrrolidine-2,5-dione have been examined as inhibitors of P450AROM and P450CSCC. The inhibitory potency for P450AROM resided in the (+)-enantiomers of (1), (2), and (4) and the (-)-enantiomers of (3) and (5). These findings have been accommodated within a molecular graphics-derived model for binding of P450AROM inhibitors to the substrate binding site. Crystallography showed that (+)-(2) has the (R)-configuration. Spectral binding studies with human placental P450AROM showed type II binding but although the KS values were in line with the IC50 values for individual compounds there was no overall correlation between KS and IC50 within the series. There was little difference in the inhibitory potency of the enantiomers and racemate of individual compounds toward P450CSCC. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Novolak-like materials have been prepared by reaction of phenol-formaldehyde resoles with aromatic amines. The hydroxymethyl groups present in resoles react with the ring carbons and the amino groups of the aromatic amine. Proportions of the two types of product vary with the amine used.

Notes: High-performance thermoplastic pressure-sensitive adhesives have been prepared by copolymerization of N-acryloylamino acid and acid derivatives with long-chain alkyl acrylate esters. A comparative study with equivalent copolymers made from conventional polar comonomers and long-chain alkyl acrylate esters has shown that the N-acryloylamino acids and derivatives impart generally higher levels of tack, adhesion, and cohesion than their conventional counterparts.

Notes: In an effort to further elucidate the mode of catalysis of metal salts in the urethane reaction, monofunctional compounds of various types and polyfunctional alcohols were allowed to react with either phenyl isocyanate or tolylene diisocyanate (80/20 mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-isomers) under catalysis by a tertiary amine or one of two metal salts. With the monofunctional compounds, the relative activity of the catalysts was cobaltous stearate 〉 stannous 2-ethylhexoate 〉 triethylenediamine. With polyfunctional compounds, however, the positions of the salts in this activity series are reversed. Evidence is presented based upon reaction kinetics and infrared spectra for the presence of a ternary complex as the reactive intermediate in the reaction catalyzed by metals salts. It is postulated that the high activity of some metal salts, such as stannous 2-ethylhexoate, can be attributed to the formation of a ternary complex which holds the functional groups in the optimum positions for reaction. Less optimum positions resulting from a different geometry of the coordination complex, lead to lower activity as observed with cobaltous stearate.

Notes: A new family of thermoplastic polyamide-polyether copolymers that display outstanding impact resistance and are especially useful as hot melt adhesives are described. These polymers are prepared by copolymerizationof polymerized fatty acid derivatives (dimer diamines) and poly(oxyalkylene) diamines with the typical polyamide monomers sebacic acid and piperazine. Impact resistance is apparently achieved through synergistic interaction between the dimer and the polyether portions of the polymers.
