Physico-chemical and preparative investigations have shown that AlCl3 reacts in POCl3 and PhPOCl2 both as chloride ion donor and acceptor.In the presence of polar chlorides, [AlCl4]- and not [AlCl5]2- or [AlCl6]3- is formed. Strong chloride ion acceptors such as FeCl3 and SbCl5 give rise to the formation of [AlCl]solv.2+-ions. The third chloride ion of AlCl3 is transferred only, if insoluble complex compounds are formed, e. g. [Al(OPCl3)6][SbCl6]3.

Konduktometrische, potentiometrische, spektrophotometrische und präparative Untersuchungen zeigen, daß AlCl3 in POCl3 und in PhPOCl2 sowohl als Chloridionendonor als auch als Chloridionenakzeptor fungieren kann. In Gegenwart von polaren Chloriden erfolgt die Bildung von [AlCl4]-, nicht aber von [AlCl5]2- oder [AlCl6]3-. Gegenüber den starken Chloridionenakzeptoren FeCl3 und SbCl5 werden 2 Chloridionen weitgehend unter Bildung von [AlCl]solv.++ abgegeben. Die Abgabe eines dritten Chloridions erfolgt in geringerem Umfang und nur dann vollständig, wenn die entstehenden Komplexe z. B. [Al(OPCl3)6][SbCl6]3 oder [Al(OPCl3)6][FeCl4]3 schwer löslich sind. Das Donor- und Akzeptorverhalten ermöglicht Rückschlüsse auf den Lösungszustand von AlCl3.
