    Notes: The mechanism of Solid particle flotation was used for explaining an alternative route of oxygen uptake by cells situated within the relatively stagnant liquid region adjacent to bubbles in a submerged culture. The Two-phase model of oxygen uptake takes into consideration uptake from both liquid and gaseous phases, the latter being denoted as the direct uptake. Experiments obtained with yeast cultures on different substrates were used to evaluate the proportion of both types of uptake. The combined model provides a better fit to experimental data compared to the one-phase model which omits the direct uptake. The results are discussed from the viewpoint of the enhancement of oxygen absorption by cells present near the interface.

    Notes: Because of the importance of the drop she distribution and interfacial area of the dispersed liquid phase in hydrocarbon fermentations, experiments were carried out to determine the drop size distribution and the interfacial area during batch fermentations of Candida lipolytica on gas oil and on n-hexadecane dissolved in dewaxed gas oil. The effects of cell concentration and dispersed phase volume fraction on size distribution and interfacial area were investigated. Measurements of interfacial tensions, densities, viscosities, and fatty acid concentrations were also made. The results show that the size distribution is skewed and that the Sauter mean diameter is in the range of 10 to 30 μ. Both the Sauter mean diameter and the interfacial area increased during the course of a batch fermentation; however, they decreased at the end of the fermentation. The interfacial area also increased with inoculum size.

    Notes: The effects of inoculum size, dispersed phase volume and substrate concentration on the batch growth of Candida lipolytica are investigated in a model system composed of n-hexadecane dissolved in dewaxed gas oil. Tabular values and parameters are presented for 16 different experiments. All of the batch growth curves exhibited a linear growth region with the length of the region ranging from 1.5 to 9.5 hours. The rate of linear growth varied both with change in dispersed phase volume and initial dispersed phase substrate concentration. A qualitative analysis of the results is presented and possible explanations for the observed linear growth rates are discussed.

    Notes: The effects of dispersed phase volume and temperature on the batch growth of Candida lipolytica on gas oil are investigated. Growth parameters are presented for two sets of experiments. The shape of growth curves was basically similar to the system composed of n-hexadecane dissolved in dewaxed gas oil, in spite of the complex nature of the substance. All of the batch growth curves exhibited a linear growth region. The rate of linear growth and its length varied with change in dispersed phase volume. The effect of temperature on growth rate was investigated for temperatures ranging from 23°C to 34°C. The results show a smaller activation energy during linear growth than during the early stages of batch growth. These results are analyzed from the viewpoint of growth models presented previously. The results indicate that growth at drop surfaces is important and that segregation effects may be important.

    Notes: The production of single-cell protein (SCP) from ethanol by different imcroorganisms is briefly reviewed. The trends in modeling the SCP production are outlined with a stress on the need to incorporate metabolic and engineering considerations into the pertinent models. Data on batch yeast growth on ethanol are analyzed, a metabolic model involving design parameters is suggested, parameters values are estimated, and their significance is discussed. The model essentially describes the response of a system to disturbances (substrate, metabolites, oxygen, etc.). An effective numerical integration procedure is necessary in the solution of the model which has “stiff” character.

    Notes: The photosynthetic growth action spectrum of a green alga at three bands of visible light (blue, orange, and red) at fixed quanta input and under light-limiting conditions was measured in a batch cultivation system. Quantum efficiencies (biomass dry weight increment per quanta absorbed) were better in the yellow-red region than in the blue region. Results served as a basis for the design and optimization of a dye system that would shift the energy of solar radiation to the required wavelength range by absorbing ultraviolet to blue radiation and emitting in the yellow-red, thus enhancing algae growth. Direct incorporation of dyes into the growth medium, although theoretically expected to enhance growth, in fact resulted in dye decomposition, toxicity to algae and consequently in growth inhibition. Indirect application of dyes in a double tubular reactor (algae inside and dye solution outside) demonstrated growth enhancement for certain dyes with high quantum yields and stability, which had suitable absorption/emission spectra for artificial light sources used. The maximum indirect growth enhancement was obtained using rhodamine 6G at a concentration of 3×10-5M with tungsten filament lamp sources.
