Notes: Abstract We have examined the distribution and extent of phosphorylation of the tight junction-associated protein ZO-1 in the epithelial MDCK cell line, and in three cell types that do not form tight junctions: S180 (sarcoma) cells, S180 cells transfected with E-cadherin (S180L), and primary cultures of astrocytes. In shortterm calcium chelation experiments on MDCK cells, removal of extracellular calcium caused cells to pull apart. However, ZO-1 remained concentrated at the plasma membrane and no change in ZO-1 phosphorylation was observed. Maintenance of MDCK cells in low calcium medium, conditions where no tight junctions are found, resulted in altered ZO-1 distribution and lower total phosphorylation of the protein. In S180 cells, ZO-1 was diffusely distributed along the entire cell surface, with concentration of the antigen in motile regions of the cell. Cell-cell contact was not a prerequisite for ZO-1 localization at the plasma membrane in this cell type, and the phosphate content of ZO-1 was found to be lower in S180 cells relative to MDCK cells. Expression of Ecadherin in S180L cells did not alter either the distribution or phosphorylation of ZO-1. In contrast to S180 cells, ZO-1 in primary cultures of astrocytes was concentrated at sites of cell-cell contact, and the phosphorylation state was the same as that in control MDCK cells. Comparison of one-dimensional proteolytic digests of 32P-labeled ZO-1 revealed the phosphorylation of two peptides in control MDCK cells that was absent in both MDCK cells grown in low calcium and in S180 cells.

Notes: Emerging guided-wave integrated optical technologies require suitable active devices and optical interconnects. Certain organic molecular materials possess the required optical nonlinearities for application in active devices. Glassy polymers, such as poly(methyl methacrylate), have been used to fabricate high optical quality passive structures. For application in integrated optics, requirements include high optical quality (low scattering and absorption losses), low dielectric constant, and suitable fabrication techniques. We describe the preparation and optical properties of a new material, class, poled polymer glasses, which combines the attractive properties of the optical nonlinearities of organic molecules and the optical quality of polymer glasses. These materials are formed by incorporating organic compounds possessing large optical nonlinearities into a host material lacking long-range order. The orientational order is imparted to the composite system by applying a strong electric field at a temperature above the glass transition temperature, where molecular motion is enhanced, thereby aligning the optically nonlinear dopant molecules. By cooling the material through the phase transition with the field still applied, the orientational order is frozen in, and the composite material possesses second-order nonlinear optical properties.

Description / Table of Contents: In this paper the acid-catalysed reaction between phenols and tung oil is investigated for 4 different phenols (phenol, o-, m- and p-cresol). This reaction is important for the production of modified resins for electrical insulating laminates. In particular by means of 13C-NMR- and IR-method it is proved that phenols are C-alkylated by tung oil in the manner of a Friedel-Crafts-reaction exceptionally. The reaction positions at the phenols are determined. Further, the rates of the reaction of phenol with the eleostearic acid esters are compared for the four different phenols.

Description / Table of Contents: In this paper the acid-catalyzed reaction between phenol and tung oil is investigated. This reaction is important for the production of modified phenolic resins for electrical insulating laminates. Based on the characterization of reaction products by means of gas- and liquid chromatography, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR spectroscopy and MS is established, that phenol is C-alkylated by tung oil in the manner of a Friedel-Crafts-reaction. Phenol reacts only with the double bonds of the eleostearic acid links of the tung oil.

Es wird festgestellt, daß Phenol durch Holzöl im Sinne einer Friedel-Crafts-Reaktion C-alkyliert wird; am Holzöl reagieren nur die Doppelbindungen der Eläostearinsäure.

Notes: A study was made of the solubility of irradiated polyethylene. The experimental data were treated according to the Saito-Inokuti theory for gel formation in polymers exposed to ionizing radiation. Among other things, this theory is based upon the molecular weight distribution of the unirradiated polymer; in the present work, the actual distributions were determined by high-temperature gel permeation chromatography and corrected for long-chain branching. Under these circumstances, good agreement between theory and experimental data was obtained, which allowed the determination of the radiation yield of main-chain scission and crosslinking.
