    Description: Extreme value theory is examined to explain the cause of the bias and spread in performance of communications systems characterized by low bit rates and high data reliability requirements, for cases in which underlying noise is Gaussian or perturbed Gaussian. Experimental verification is presented and procedures that minimize these effects are suggested. Even under these conditions, however, extreme value theory test results are not particularly more significant than bit error rate tests.

    Description: Bandwidth constraints in earth-satellite communication systems force consideration of uncoded M-ary modulation to obtain increased data rates. M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) at first glance seems most promising because of the high transmitter efficiency achieved through Class C operation. Multiple phase-and-amplitude modulation candidates such as quadrature amplitude shift keying (QASK) appear less promising because the transmitter must operate at lower efficiency (in linear or multimode operation). However, initial studies indicate that QASK offers significant raw dc-power savings over MPSK, despite the reduced transmitter efficiency. For example, at S-band both solid-state and traveling wave tube (TWT) QASK transmitters can provide a 3-dB average dc-power savings over comparable 16-ary phase shift keying (PSK) for the same bit rate and error probability. The reason for this savings is that QASK requires much less average signal-to-noise ratio than 16-ary PSK for the same error rate.

    Description: Selection of a particular signal set array for a bandwidth-constrained multiple phase-and-amplitude-shift-keyed (MPASK) communication system for a linear additive Gaussian noise channel requires consideration of factors such as average and/or peak power vs symbol error probability, signal amplitude dynamic range, simplicity of generation and detection, and number of bit errors per symbol error (Gray code properties). A simple technique is presented for generating and optimally detecting the honeycomb (hexagonal) signal set, i.e., the signal set that has the tightest sphere-packing properties. The symbol and bit error probability performance of this set is compared to other two-dimensional signal sets that have been investigated in the literature, and is shown to be slightly superior from an average power standpoint. The paper concludes with a comparison of all of these signal sets from the standpoint of the factors listed above.

    Description: This paper reviews the data rate, error rate, and signal-to-noise ratio relationship for various uncoded M-ary digital amplitude modulation (AM), phase modulation (PM), and combined AM-PM systems. These signal systems have the common virtue that expanding the number of possible signals to be transmitted increases the data rate but not the bandwidth. A general treatment of the error rate of M-ary digital AM-PM permits development of a simple yet accurate expression which approximates the increase in average signal-to-noise ratio (over that of binary phase shift keying) required for constant error performance. This equation provides insight into why arrays differ in their signal-to-noise ratio requirements.

    Description: A class of multiple-phase amplitude-shift-keying (MPASK) signal sets based upon a hexagonal design is presented. The sets give slightly improved error probability performance over any other MPASK set thus far reported in the literature. The hexagonal signal set designs presented are motivated by a sphere-packing argument. Gray codes for binary data are considered, giving attention to questions regarding the 'best' impure Gray code that can be constructed for hexagonal signal sets.

    Description: Quadrature amplitude-shift key (QASK) transmitter configurations are discussed that are shown to have lower power-to-noise ratio's (PNR's) than competing multiphase-shift key (MPSK) satellite communication systems despite reduced transmitter efficiency. This is possible because the required SNR of the QASK system is considerably less than that of a MPSK system. The PNR's and other parameters of the two systems are compared.

    Description: Performance tests (error probability measurements) of communications systems characterized by low bit rates and high reliability requirements frequently utilize classical extreme value theory (EVT) to avoid the excessive test times encountered with bit error rate (BER) tests. If the underlying noise is Gaussian or perturbed Gaussian, the EVT error estimates have either excessive bias or excessive variance if an insufficient number of test samples is used. EVT is examined to explain the cause of this bias and spread. Experimental verification is made by testing a known Gaussian source, and procedures that minimize these effects are described. It seems apparent that even under the best of conditions the EVT test results are not particularly better than those of BER tests.
