Summary Examination of the seed coat of the kidney beanPhaseolus vulgaris L. (var. Kentucky Wonder) in the mature dry condition revealed a layer of cells in which almost every component cell contains a calcium oxalate crystal. These crystals were isolated and studied by light and scanning electron microscopy, and we determined with powder X-ray diffraction that the crystalline substance is calcium oxalate monohydrate (whewellite). The crystals are chevron-shaped or straight twins found in a ratio of 1/1.4. When studiedin situ the crystals were found embedded in a multilayered mass of wall material.
