Notes: Reductive Arylation of Vinyl Trifluromethanesulfonates by Friedel-Crafts ReactionThe reaction of vinyl triflates 1 with benzene and toluene in the presence of aluminium trichloride gives alkyl-, alkenyl-, and 1,1-diarylalkanes 5, 6, 3, 9 depending on the structure of the substrate used. A mechanism for the reductive arylation is proposed.

Notes: Talc-filled polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by extrusion in a wide composition range (0-40 wt %). To improve the affinity relation between talc and the PP matrix, we modified the talc surface with silane coupling agents. Differential scanning calorimetry investigations on test samples, prepared by injection moulding, revealed that the talc content and its surface modification had a pronounced effect on the crystallization behavior of the filled PP composites. The experimental results indicate that a talc concentration of 2 wt % strongly affects the nonisothermal crystallization process of the PP, especially when talc is silane treated Isothermal crystallization experiments on samples with minimum amounts of talc (2 wt %) revealed an improved nucleation activity with silane-treated talc. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A detailed analysis of the 13C NMR spectra of 39 isomeric ent-beyer-15-enes and ent-beyeranes functionalized at C-7, C-14, C-15 and C-16 has been performed. This diterpenic skeleton is a good example of a semirigid bicyclo[3.2.1]octane system. The sensitivity of 13C shielding to the stereochemical environment, particularly in polyfunctional compounds, has been confirmed. In some cases the ent-beyer-15-enes and ent-beyeranes show similar behaviour to that of similarly functionalized bicyclo[3.2.1]octane derivatives, but in other cases the shielding effects are very different. The compounds studied are a good model for the evaluation of shielding effects in exo/endo isomers of strained and rigid carbocyclic compounds.

Description: Hydrographic and meteorlogical data collected in the field and taken from publications are presented in the report. River flow measurements were available for six major rivers entering coastal bay areas in 1969 and three in 1970. Measurements were available from January through September. Commercial landings indicate shrimp and crabs were taken in larger numbers in areas of higher rainfall and lower salinities. Finfish were taken in larger numbers in the Laguna Madre where rainfall was lower and salinities were relatively higher. Habitat modifications included routine maintenance dredging of the Intracoastal Waterway and existing channels, dredging of new channels, drilling oil wells, placement of pipelines, bulkheading and filling, mud shell dredging.

Description: Hydrographic and meteorlogical data for Texas bays, including Galveston, were collected in the field and taken from publications. Salinity patterns varied along the coast in relation to rainfall distribution, but in general increased in most areas from January through July as a result of decreased rainfall and reduced runoff. Heavy rainfall from tropical storm Fern in September brought about flooding of low-lying areas. Minor fish kills from cold weather were recorded during the first part of the year but in general, temperatures followed normal seasonal trends. Dissolved oxygen and pH readings remained above critical levels and varied little from previous years. Turbidity readings were generally lower than those recorded in 1970, as a result of reduced runoff and calmer weather. Habitat modifications included maintenance dredging of existing channels, dredging of new channels and basins, marine construction, discharging of oil field brine, drilling of oil wells, placement of pipelines and mud shell dredging.

Description: The irradiation of gold nanorod colloids with a femtosecond laser can be tuned to induce controlled nanorod reshaping, yielding colloids with exceptionally narrow localized surface plasmon resonance bands. The process relies on a regime characterized by a gentle multishot reduction of the aspect ratio, whereas the rod shape and volume are barely affected. Successful reshaping can only occur within a narrow window of the heat dissipation rate: Low cooling rates lead to drastic morphological changes, and fast cooling has nearly no effect. Hence, a delicate balance must be achieved between irradiation fluence and surface density of the surfactant on the nanorods. This perfection process is appealing because it provides a simple, fast, reproducible, and scalable route toward gold nanorods with an optical response of exceptional quality, near the theoretical limit.
