Abstract The effect of BF3 in facilitating the reaction of hydrogen exchange in benzene under the action of HF has been evidenced by obtaining a STO-3G SCF description of the reaction coordinate in the presence and in the absence of BF3. The catalyst reduces the height of the reaction barrier to less than half. In both cases the reaction path goes smoothly to the barrier without evidence of stable intermediates.
