Notes: Abstract Sol gel derived composite materials were prepared from methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) and tetraethyleneoxidedimethacrylate (TEGDMA). The amount of MPTS in the composites was varied from 0 to 50 mole%. MPTS was prehydrolyzed at room temperature with 0,1 mole/l HCl/H2O. After complete removal of solvent calculated amounts of TEGDMA were added to the reaction mixture of the prehydrolyzed MPTS. Thermically initiated free radical copolymerization of the methacrylate endgroups was performed in the resulting mixture under nitrogen atmosphere using azobisisobutyronitril (AIBN) as initiator. The composites were investigated by high resolution transmission electronmicroscopy in order to investigate the morphology. The thermomechanical properties as storage, loss modulus, tan δ as well as the glass transition temperature (T g ) of the composites were estimated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA).

Notes: Ferulic acid, sinapinic acid and 2,5-dihydroxybendoic acid (DHBA) have been tested as matrix materials for matrix-asserted laser desorption of the pure oligonucleotide pd(T)12 and a mixture of oligonucleotides pd(T)12 through pd(T)18 using pulsed 337 nm radiation combined with reflecting time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The three matrix materials are compared with respect to obtainable mass resolution, degree of fragmentation, and adduct formation, as well as the highest mass resolution.

Notes: We report time-of-fight mass spectra of test mixtures of six single-stranded DNA segments. The segments range in size from 8 to 60 nucleotides (molecular weight range 2413 to 18 602 Da). The best mass spectra were obtained by pulsed laser ablation of thin frozen films of an aqueous solution of the mixture from an oxidized copper substrate. These mass spectra are dominated by the molecular-ion peak for each DNA segment, and show little evidence of fragmentation, peak broadening or cluster formation. In contrast, mass spectra obtained using UV laser ablation from an anthranilic acid matrix yield broad peaks with evidence of fragmentation, and DNA segments longer than 26 nucleotides are difficult to detect.

Notes: Photoionization with coherent 118 nm vacuum ultraviolet light is applied to study kinetic energies of gramicidin S and ferulic acid molecules, laser desorbed from a ferulic acid matrix with 266 nm light. Analysis of the matrix photodecomposition products shows decarboxylation as a main photochemical pathway involved with desorption. Entrainment of the polypeptide by the matrix molecules is found under typical conditions. However, the velocity distributions are not particularly narrow, being at most borderline supersonic.
