Abstract Ashy stem blight (ASB), caused byMacrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid., is a common severe disease affectingPhaseolus vulgaris in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The effect of inoculating seeds ofP. vulgaris withBurkholderia cepacia strain UPR 5C on the severity of ASB was studied under greenhouse conditions. Results of this study showed thatB. cepacia reduced the ASB disease severity by 71% and was compatible withRhizobium phaseoli CIAT 632.
